COD - Why the hate?

it's kind of like the FPS equivalent of Match of the Day or Top Gear (football analysis and motor journalism for children/simpletons).

It's popular because you don't have to work to play it. Which is why it's less popular with people who'd make the effort to sign up to a message board to moan about games! Not really sure where my point went...

Just can't get into any of them (I've owned MW 2 for years and still haven't played it much - PC version) - didn't stop me thoroughly enjoying the MW3 launch night in London a couple of years ago (free booze, food, gaming and watching Joey Barton being pwned by a thirteen year old live at the event)

I play against the 'world number 1' on hardcore search (ghosts). I was top 200 on Domination back on MW2 simply because I played a lot. My k/d is way better than the top guy on ghosts (& I'm rubbish) but he's chalked up 50 DAYS worth of online gaming. Day or evening, he'll be playing - crazy!

Finished the campaign for AW a little while ago. It was pretty good. It's still 'hold your hand' shooting action but it's pulled off with considerably more panache than Ghosts was. The levels are typically short and there are a couple with irritatingly long intro sections (though nothing as torturous as the awful bit in Ghosts where the old Ghost interrogates you in the Las Vegas hotel). Overall, it's engaging stuff and good fun to play. The achievements are mostly pretty simple too. It's quite a lot longer than Ghosts was too, and the level design is much improved. I like the fact that they've gone back to some arena style levels and levels with multiple routes through, that adds some excitement and tactical choice to the matter.


The multiplayer continues to be impressive. I wonder if they'll perhaps tweak the balance of the killstreaks yet; although it's a welcome experience without them constantly popping up, some of the higher level kill streaks (which reset on death) never appear unless right after a care package has been dropped, so I guess you'd need to be a wizard to get them! With the level design being so much less symmetrical, there are far fewer hiding places so racking up big scores in one life can be tough.

I love COD4, still probably my favourite FPS ever made. I got MW2 after that, and hated it, just too gimmicky with the heart beat sensors, whatever the perk was called where people somehow grew inspector gadget arms so they could stab you from about 10 yds away and all the things like that. As I played a lot of competitive COD4 and all the guys I played with moved on to MW2, I tried to stick with it for a while, but within a month, we were all back on COD4. Black Ops was okay, but still far from great and after that, I gave up on the COD series. The latest ones look a bit too futuristic for my liking (I like simple weapons like AKs). It seems there are a fair few people that share the same view of COD4, the guys I used to play with want an updated version of that (new maps, better graphics, just a few simple perks/kill streaks, no dual wielding, basically a game where the better players win rather than one where the most ridiculous weapon combo and perks wins).

I read somewhere that the best way to see COD (SP at least) is as one of those old light gun games, like Time Crisis - you duck in and out of cover moving down a liner corridor.
