Although you can play it as a mayor, so you have to balance income with what you can buy. There is also a built in mod mode that will allow you to play with unlimited funds and all the features unlocked.
I found this mode to be great way to get to grips with the the game play and to plan better road layouts, how far away the residents can be from the industry zones etc.

Installed it last night on Steam and it runs like a bag of bad stuff on my Mac, which is within the recommended spec..

I'll have to tweak the settings and see what's up. The keyboard and mouse prompts are all for PC too which is annoying.

Check the support forums. Apparently they know about issues with mac's and they are sorting it. But in the mean time there are some work arounds.

Open up the preferences of steam, and disable steam overlay.
Im running it on a 2013 13' retina mac, on medium settings and its running ok. slightly laggy frame rate, and the fan runs on maximum but no problems running.

I found the +3 speed button and my city was progressing well using it to quicken the process. I bought a new land tile and was merrily building away on it at +3 speed, neglecting my previous area while I built.

Finished building, went back to find most people dead or sick, with nearly every building abandoned and no money/income to build a few more hospitals and cemeteries.

Lesson learnt!

Noticed no screenshots yet, so here's my city with 75k population so far. Been spending waaaaaaaaaaay too much time on this!

Would love to see some of your cities. I haven't gotten into any modding yet, and some of the player made maps look amazing.

Overview of my whole city, I think I only have half of the total amount of tiles unlocked so far.

For scale, this is just a tiny part of my city. Ignore the dirt roads, it's "old town" from when I first started out and was broke. Haven't gotten around to upgrading this area yet, so much to do!!

Yeah, i'm not very good at forward planning.....

Public transport working as intended?

Nice city. Will post up pictures of the disgrace I call a city later. We have pollution, traffic problems, fire problems, crime problems, you name it my city has it. But I have a posh area which is going really well, so screw the rest. The rich people are happy.

I'm glad I stumbled across this thread, I'm struggling to find any interesting games recently to get my build fix and the last Sim City was terrible. Will buy this later!

hehe

Sounds a bit like the attitude / game described in Iain Banks' novel Complicity, an excellent read btw and the game was called Despot.
