Got this about 2 weeks ago after seeing vids on YouTube, and I absolutely love it! Way back I played a huge amount of SimCity on the Atari ST, and this has a similar feel.
The way the traffic works is brilliant, every vehicle modelled and on a real journey - makes traffic jams so realistic!
Am currently on a population of ~80k, and am having few problems (touch wood!), my traffic system of raised arterial routes feeding into fairly separated regions doesn't seem to generate much pressure.
Will try to get some pics up when I get the PC fired up.

Some pics. This is my first city, seems to be going OK so far!

Overview. Only 5 tiles used so far, and still plenty of room to expand.

Getting junctions looking good isn't a priority atm, just so long as they work!

Dams are great, produce loads of clean power! I love how the water levels are modelled so well.

Have just started experimenting with specialised zones..

I think not building an huge urban jungle makes a big difference, though I should really bang in some more trees to help reduce noise..

Been playing with mods a bit of late, and have found a few good'uns. I already had the 25 tiles mod, but have just added the ground level camera mod, which lets you get right down amongst the peeps and get a whole new view of your city. The level of detail available that you can't really see in the unmodded game, even at the closest view, is remarkable! For example, here's a dog praying to the god of lampposts!

Have also got the tree brush mod, which plonks down a spinney's worth of trees, rather than having to place one at a time. As it uses the city editor you don't actually pay for the trees, which some may regard as a bit of a cheat, but it saves SO much time, as well as preventing RSI! hehe

Anyone else struggling with traffic flow?

Trying to keep traffic out of the residential areas while allowing people in/out of them.

Also cashflow is a bh, no way is 60k enough to start building a city when a coal powerplant is 18k.

Before expanding roads or anything, try one ways they really help with flow and when coming off highways.

Also first power plant, try a wind turbine, they help reduce cost at the start. before you move onto the water base turbines.

Tried that, they create junctions on the through road? Going to try using the on/off ramps tool to see if that fixes it.

Also Tunnels??? Can you actually build road tunnels?

Roundabouts are the key, you can download a no traffic light mod that also assists. or larger junctions use motorway for the roundabout itself.

Nope not tunnels, my way of dealing with it traffic is fly overs for lorries. So the lorries are kept seperate and away from my normal traffic and i get the lorries on the highway asap.

One ways streets shouldn't creating traffic light junctions and if used correctly with it then its fantastic way to do it. The metro is a fantastic tool aswell, buses can become a pain if it becomes overcrowded but your population will walk a distance if needed. Making free public transport works well getting them away from cars and onto metro and buses. I tend to use buses from small areas into a major area at a metro point.

My current small city is very dense residential and then industrial, so a few metro stations at either location would be sufficient

I had a few dry runs making mistakes up to a population of 5k... tonight is the beginning of setting up Smeghead City for real!

Loving this game so far and I'm not really a PC Gamer. Want to make a 100k place before playing with mods, by that time there should be some really interesting stuff available :-).

Yep, one ways are a real help in directing traffic where you want it. The main thing I've found though is that using normal two way streets is plenty even in very high density areas. Anything more seems to create more problems than they solve, like traffic lights. Traffic lights in the model are a right royal pain in the arse. I've pretty much exclusively used normal two ways, one ways and 3-lane motorways. 6 lanes doesn't seem to give any benefit either, the peeps don't use all the lanes efficiently, just 1 or 2 of them..

Also, totally agree with RB, windmills are the way to go at the start. Cheap, and very scalable. Couldn't use the water-based turbines as I have no windy areas in water on my map, but land based ones were sufficient until I splurged and built a dam. They do however produce a stload of noise.. Never yet had the need to build either oil or coal powered leccy supplies.

Oh yeah, and metros are great, really wish I'd built them earlier than I did. They take a load of pressure off the road system, and also increase happiness in the area round the station. They're not cheap, but deffo worth doing.

massive poo dam, producing around 600-800mw

and this totally eliminated the traffic hell that was this area before, although it took me many ingame years to finally get around to doing it.

Love this game. Only had time to do one city so far and it's at 60k pop. just to let you guys know they are working on official road tunnels.

I guess it will be an extension to the bridge system and you can page down to go under the metro tunnels.

Just took the first images of my mess haha.

City Overview 1 by blayney1989, on Flickr

Bottom left is where I started - it underwent a waterfront makeover when I flooded it with the dam... had to build a new bridge and a second one when traffic got too much. Straight across the river is a large low density residential area that is all twisty and a big grid designed industrial estate.

The two areas on the right are where I started to think more about planning the road layouts and the services.. so I didn't actually put landfill in the middle of residential! You can also see my expo centre and stadium there too.

At the back you can see my first specialised industrial area for oil, although that is now importing as everything is used up as well as my first large high density residential, commercial and office areas as well as a large tower (I can't remember which one it is).

I have started expanding to the left where the motorway runs, but across the river from that is may favourite area - all low density, nice tree lined streets and happy happy people who never complain about the smell of the dead.

That's the specialised oil industry and some high density stuff closer up

This is the new expansion I am working on currently. As you can see I have cargo train and harbour here. A very ridiculous intersection and what I am hoping will work out to be much better traffic managed areas.

I call the area running across the top of the grid "New San Francisco" as it reminds me of SF
