I will definitely consider that. Thanks for the advice.

Now, has anyone got a Murmansk premium tier 5 Russian cruiser? I hear that its an OP version of the Omaha. If that is the case I am definitely interested!

I have a Murmansk and yes it's a better version. Longer range torpedoes (8Km), turn rate and a couple of other things I can't remember. It's worth it for £9 if you want to spend any real money on this game.

Well, I had 4k gold carried over from CBT so dropped 3k on the Murmansk.

First game out, 7 kills, God knows how much damage I put out, 415,000 credits and 4500 xp!

I think this might be a good ship lick

Should have screenshotted the results screen but forgot.rolleyes

Totally loving this game, if you compare the "Beta" to most released games nowadays it is leaps and bounds ahead!

Yes, it's been developed very well. They've obviously put a lot of thought into it after the disaster that was World of Warplanes. It's pretty stable too. I've only had 2-3 crashes in about 1K games.

There's always going to be balance issues with a game like this. But then they're constantly fiddling with World of Tanks and that's been out over 4 years on PC and still isn't at version 1.0

Well I said it was a good ship, but that's impressive. cool

It's a Russian game, so the Russian ships are going to be a bit OP. Even American lend-lease ones like the Murmansk.

Do you have the Gremyashashasy destroyer? It's a very capable ship too.

If they're any indicator of the rest of the Russian line, they should be worth playing.

I do have the Gremy. It was part of a bundle I bought which allowed access to the CBT. iIt included 5k Gold, the Gremy, the Yubari and the Sims.

I haven't played the Gremy much as, to be honest, I haven't really mastered the balls to the wall play style of the Destroyers yet. Also, I can't seem to hit the side or a barn door with torpedoes. I need to play them more to get the hang of it.

They sure look like fun though.

I wasn't keen on destroyers when I first started playing, but now I'm getting the hang of them they are indeed a lot of fun. Things you need to be aware of is your own detection range and your torpedo range. Best situation is when your torpedo range is greater than your detection range, as you can then sneak up on players to unleash a torpedo spread without being spotted. The fun is finding the gaps and opportunities that allow you to do that.

Japanese destroyers generally have short detection ranges, long torpedo ranges & crap guns.

American destroyers as a rule have usable guns, but short (4.5 Km - 5.5 Km) torpedo ranges and aren't as stealthy as Japanese ones. That means you have to get creative and ambush people where you can. I think they're harder to play, but more satisfying when you get it right. Sometimes I'll be super aggressive and charge straight at my target. Battleships find it hard to hit oncoming ships, so you can often get away with this. Once at close range, wheel round, loose off a spread of torps and run off directly away from them.

The Gremy has decent (if a bit slow to turn) guns, a 7km detection range and 8Km torpedoes, so it has the best of both worlds. If the guns rotated faster it would be very OP.

It's the only one of the bundle that I bought.

That Gremy thing is absurd, a division of 2 just took out 6 of our ships (including our carrier so the enemy torpedo bombers took out the rest of the battleships) and capped.

Not sure how much I'll play this game, I really enjoy the games that are a shooting match, but when I'm enjoying myself in my battleship and I hear the 'bleep torpedoes to port' go off too late to do anything about it it gets rather dull. Same with the torpedo bombers that can take me down to 10% health without me even firing a single shot of AA (in a fully upgraded Wyoming).

If there's Destroyers in the battle and you are firing your guns, assume you are visible. It's so easy to kill something 10 k away if that ship changes neither course or speed.

Yep, keep zig zagging beeeeeches. wink

During the last war, zee Germans developed homing torpedoes that would steer at a ship's propeller noise. This was quickly defeated by towing a noise maker decoy behind the ship. A Canadian invention IIRC.

Doesn't the murmansk have like 14km guns?

Can't you also use the spotter (not fighter) to increase your range to 18km or something?

They're 14.8 Km by default. I think spotter planes add an extra 20% to range.. so 17.76 Km. The range circle certainly enlarges noticeably as soon as you launch a plane.

It also has very good AA armament. Oh and the torpedoes hit a lot harder (14,400 vs 11,733)

I had a couple of excellent games last night. First game was in the Murmansk. Not as epic as it’s maiden voyage but still a beast game. 250k credits and 2500 xp. Highlight was a head to head engagement with the enemy carrier. I knew roughly where he was by the direction his waves of attack aircraft were coming from and returning but he was obviously running from me. He kept sending squadrons of dive bombers and torpedo bombers against me. I had some epic evasive manoeuvres which resulted in umpteen near misses and only one bomb hit and one torpedo hit both of which I was able to repair immediately for moderate damage overall.

On the other hand I shot down 15 of his strike aircraft which must have been most of his force as the aerial assault faded away towards the end to next to nothing. Our game ticker reached 1k before I could find his carrier unfortunately.

Turns out the Murmansk is an excellent anti air cruiser as well as being a formidable anti ship platform.

Next game in Omaha was bottom tier against tier 7s. I had a mediocre win for my daily ofcourse.rolleyes

Next 4 games were all losses or draws but I played my socks off and had good games. But I just couldn’t carry hard enough to save the scrub teams I was on. All those losses were 130k credit and 1200xp losses. Still that is 6k towards the Cleveland.

Highlight was engaging a full health Myogi. I closed to within 9km moving from left to right across his arc of fire peppering him with HE fire. I knew he would be leading me with his main guns and I waited until I saw him firing and immediately turned hard starboard towards him easily dodging his salvo. I closed to within 6km and fired a narrow spread of torpedoes at the fire controls recommended intersection point. Then a few seconds later I fired a second narrow spread to the left of the initial spread at the point I reckoned he would turn either into or away from the first spread. I turned my boat hard to port to take me in the opposite direction to the traverse of his main guns and to put me well out of range of his secondaries.
4 of my torpedoes hit him, blowing him out of the water. Very very satisfying.

Damned game ended in a draw unfortunately as my scrubs ignored my repeated calls to join me in the cap until it was too late.irked

Oh well, still very much fun games. Oh and the Omaha is no slouch at anti air even with the B hull. Each of those 4 defeat games I had between 5 and 8 air kills per game. Turns out the Omaha’s scout aircraft is an effective CAP aircraft as well and will move automatically to engage nearby threats.

I'm still on the St Louis, although I've unlocked the tier 3 battleship with it. I need another 4K XP to get the Phoenix.

One ship I really like is the tier 3 Japanese cruiser - the Tenyru. It has a nice balance of guns, torps and speed. I had a 6 kill game with it last night.

You can pick it up ingame for 3000 gold or you can buy it along with a slot for about £8.50 from the online store. Its a real bargain.

FYI the Murmansk is actually a lendlease Omaha class cruiser which was given to the USSR and renamed by them. It is basically a Omaha with the C hull.

I had good times with the Tenyru as well. It seems like a well balanced ship. I have elited and sold it now but haven't bought the tier 4 Kuma (I think is is the Kuma)yet. I want to concentrate on the American cruisers before going further with the IJN ones.

You will enjoy the Phoenix once you have finished with the St Louis, but don't sell the St Louis. It is way too much fun.

And after the Phoenix comes the Omaha, which is basically a Murmansk, which you are already familiar with. smile

Yeah, I've played them all before. I got up to the tier 6 cruisers, which are both good.

I don't play PvP though, so it'll take slightly longer to get back there, especially with a free account.
