You have to play with other people against bots for the first few games anyway. Once you get to level 2 you can play against people. You don't have to though; You can play against bots all the time if you want. You just wont earn as many credits & XP and you won't get any medals.
Bots can be SOBs to play against. They REALLY don't like destroyers and they'll focus fire you, even if they're being attacked by other ships.

General thoughts. Basic difference between US and IJN destroyers is that US have better guns but IJN have better torpedoes. The only ships that the guns on US destroyers really give them an advantage over is IJN destroyers, so my personal preference when playing destroyers is the Japanese line.
The biggest diffeence between the two lines of cruisers is that the majority of Japanese cruisers are fitted with torpedo launchers whereas only the Omaha and Phoenix on the US line have them.
Battleships, Japanese tend to have longer range, but they are not partcularly accurate when used at long distance. Americans are good at close in brawling.
No one likes carriers.
Keepers for me so far have been the tier 2 IJN destroyer, Isokaze. Torpedoes reload every 30 seconds which make it a hoot. Tier 3 American cruiser the St Louis. Bristling with guns its probably a bit OP so enjoy it before it gets nerfed. At tier 5 the Japanese destroyer Minekaze and battleship Kongo are both good ships.

I just got the Omaha on Saturday. I have to say it is a lot of fun and a keeper for sure. I still don't have all the modules unlocked yet but I do have hull B. I hear that hull B is favoured over hull C if you want main gun firepower over anti-air firepower.
I will probably stick with hull B. I seem to be knocking down planes with reasonable regularity as it is.
Just upgraded my Omaha to the C hull and I think I'll swap it back to the B, had a few games in the C and I think I shot down 1 plane despite the AA firing continuously for a minute on one occasion when 3 squadrons flew directly overhead to attack the battleship I was escorting. The AA does seem utterly random, I remember with the B hull I shot down 7 planes in one battle but now they just fire wildly into the air not hitting anything.I will probably stick with hull B. I've just created a NA Server account using identical credentials for EU account including email and profile name. When I next fire up the game will the NA Server option appear in the login dropdown alongside the current EU Server? Or will I need to do something funky with the install.
Is there even any point to having both accounts? better pings for EU I imagine for starters.
I do realise they are separate entities, and I'll need to start from scratch.

Thanks for the tips chaps.
Anybody take the full survey that was linked via an email?
It was like being psycho-analysed!!
Yeah told them I am fairly happy with the game and enjoying it. Felt the Torpedo bombers were quite OP against certain Battle ships where they have no AA and the bombers could drop torps right on top of them and kill them instantly. OK there isn't really much they can do but it does get annoying when it happens every other game. Anybody take the full survey that was linked via an email?

They could probably buff the torp bombers so their torps have a minimum arming distance of say 750m to 1km. I have no idea what the current minimum arming distance is though ?!
ETA I was watching a Baronvongamez (sp?) vid last night, he doesn't really do carriers, only one vid iirc, being inexperienced, he dropped torps further away than experienced carrier pilots which gave a couple of enemy ships time to turn into the spread and avoid them.
