I have a question for any Destroyer experts out there. I am currently on the Mutsuki and oddly enough I am going well with it. I have the top hull and guns unlocked but have not spent the credits to upgrade.

The reason being that although I gain more rapid firing guns, I lose 2 of them and am reduced to 2 guns. I didn't see the point of spending almost a million credits to upgrade the guns on a ship that is predominantly a Torpedo boat ns its guns are mediocre at best anyway.

Am I missing a trick here and should I invest in the more rapid firing guns even though I lose 2 of them? confused

I imagine the DPM is still higher, even with fewer guns.

Seems to be that a lot of secondary armament was stripped out of WW2 warships to make way for greatly increased AA armament. A necessary trade off in order to keep the superstructure's weight down.

I didn't upgrade my Mutsuki hull. Seemed like a backward step to me.

Yes it seems that the upgrade reduces the gun turrets but increases the AA ability. It seems to have gone from totally useless and will be utterly useless instead.

I think I will save my million or so credits and stick with what is working for me at the moment.

Especially when it's switched off most of the time.

The upgrade gets you 10.9 rounds per minute as opposed to 5 and the turret traverse for 180deg is down from 30sec to 18, chance of setting on fire remains 8% with HE so it's a trade I've taken as I can pump out more shells per minute and track close targets with the guns whilst my torps reload.

I've only ever used my main guns on destroyers when either dancing with enemy destroyers or spamming as much as possible while waiting on a finishing volley from a heavy cruiser or battleship hehe

Much prefer getting as close as possible before detection.

Oh indeed, sneaky is best and use of torp and detection ranges but sometimes it's guns at 100 paces and it pays to have those fast swivelling turrets.

Anybody care to comment on Tier level vs time invested vs enjoyment.

I've enjoyed playing casually for a few weeks and have tier IV US ships but I suspect I might be nearing the sweet spot for having fun with relatively close range guns and torps and without to many aircraft (I'm not enjoying my own carrier that much, prefer shooting than RTS)

Is there more "fun" when climbing further tiers?

I got to Fuso at tier VI and rather lost interest. I wanted Yamato but it seems just too far away and the differences between the ships not great enough to satisfy.
I might come back to the game when British ships are launched.

Both me and my platoon buddy enjoyed the game in small doses up to tier 6, but somehow we got into a couple of tier 8/9 games (can't remember how off the top of my head, it could've been a tier 6 destroyer or maybe one of us got a tier 7 cruiser/battleship) and the games were just boring. It's just battleships sat at maximum range lobbing shells at each other, destroyers charging about just outside detection range spamming torpedoes and aircraft swooping in and nuking something in seconds.
As with the poster above, we'll probably return once the Royal Navy are in to see if the game has improved.

I got up to the tier 7 Nagato in closed beta, but with the greatly increased grind I just can't be bothered with it any more.

It depends on your idea of fun to be honest. Alot of fun at T5/6, I also enjoy the challenges of higher tiers.

Worked my way to Yamato and Zao in release. Currently playing IJN Battleships and have in my port Kongo, Fuso, Nagato and Yamato. All of them are great fun in their own right.

Yes you have to put the time in, but I love the game. Played over 1k battles since release and not planning on stopping!

I have a pimped Aoba which is devastating but I keep getting chucked in higher tier battles and raped by battleships with 20k range and cruisers that can spam as well as a St Louis but hit as hard as anything you encounter.

Tier 5 and 6 hit the sweet spot for me. Some nice ships at those tiers, far enough along the grind process to be largely free of the majority of players who have no idea what they are doing, and repair bills that don't break the bank.
