It is really fun, it's a good game IMO, just issues with server connectivity (nothing new for EA), probably as last night was release day and I'd had the luxury of playing it a day early on quieter servers.

It should improve over the weekend I'd hope.

This evening I've done 4 races and spebt about 20k on my RX7, suddenly the game kicked me back to the main menu, I rejoined and it hadn't saved my progress. Now I'm back in I cant even buy car parts, it keeps saying 'purchase failed'.

Talk about overcomplicating things...
That seems very odd that you completed 4 races & when the server disconnected you it didn't save any of that progress. The game autosaves the moment you finish a race & goes back into free roam. I only had it happen to me once yesterday & that was just as the race finished & the last summary bit didn't finish. Everything up till that race had saved. I think you might have just had some extra bad luck there.

So is it worth buying? Thinking of picking it up tomorrow evening! Not expecting a sim but is it fun?
I played for about 3 and a bit hours yesterday & have to say, it started off pretty weak & just full of annoying cutscenes. But after I earned some cash & got up a few levels I did get more into it. I'm about level 19 now & still only have the starter car (BRZ modified to around 500-600bhp) as I'm having a hard time deciding what else to get.

The graphics are pretty good, the gameplay has gotten better since I've been able to make my car a lot more powerful, the sound effects are spot on (like most other NFS games) & the AI is only annoying about half the time. Also that stty EA catchup thing seems a lot better now, if I'm doing an amazing run without any faults whatsoever I've not had one of the seriously weaker opponent cars suddenly rocket past me in a turn doing about 250mph.

Some of the customisation could be done better. Like the restricted parts bullst not being as clear as it could be of what's actually required to have a part fitted. Also, am I just being slow or is there no way to remove visual aftermarket parts without stripping them all of at the same time? I've tried to select the stock parts but just says they are locked. This might be to do with the fact that it is a starter car but it's still annoying having to reset everything & redo the stance every time I want to make a change.

Also some of the music is REALLY st.

But yeah I'd say it's worth a buy. Maybe not this close to F4 as mentioned before but if you've got the cash & a free weekend.....

It was really odd. If you see the screenshot I posted of my grey RX7, I had around 13k. That was when I left for work Thursday morning.

When I got home, I spent that 13k on parts, did 2 drift events then spent another 8k. I had the car white with hood, lips, WEDS wheels.

Swapped to my 993 to do a max speed event, and during the race the route / checkpoint markings just kept disappearing. After a while I got the message that I'd lost connectivity to the server, and got kicked back to the main menu.

Went back into the game, and when it loaded, my RX7 was back to how you see in the screenshot. Whenever I tried to buy parts, I got the error 'purchase failed'.

So I left and and rejoined, and this time my RX7 was modified, but the couple of decals I'd also added weren't there. This time, I couldn't even leave the garage. I'd press 'leave garage' then 'yes' and nothing would happen.

I went back and forth closing and reopening the game about 6 times and kept having the same issue so gave up.

I assume it does autosave, perhaps it maintains a 'history' of saves and it couldn't figure out which one to load. Either way it was pretty frustrating, I'll try again tonight.

ETA: Oh and the one time I got back into the game, when I tried to teleport to an event, nothing happened.

Just seems completely stupid to have the basic functions of a game so reliant on an internet connection laugh

I'd imagine it's to stop someone hacking the game and allowing them to get all the best cars & performance parts etc. with no effort., especially since this has a lot of online multiplayer now. Keeping a record of all transactions would be something all these online games do, but then it goes wrong you certainly notice it...

Christ I hope the PC version isn't this bad...

You would have thought they'd learn their lesson from Sim City.

I played about 5hrs last night, but two of those were just messing around with my mate so I'm still level 12. I sold my first car and the free pre-order parts I got and bought myself an AE86 and a R32 Skyline. Sorry Rogue but I cannot agree with your comments on it, it's not as bad as you see it.

As per previous posters the graphics and sounds are spot on! The cars look amazing too and the small amount of damage you get when you hammer into stuff looks good with the general grime you pick up if you stay out of your garage for a long time adds to the finishing touches.
Two small points with the graphics - 1. no changing view at all and 2. if you are stationary and turn the wheel you see the whole steering wheel move down and in the direction you are turning... so all these cars have moveable steering columns!!! Nice work EA.

The AI is quite noticably rubber-banded to your car, but it's greatly improved over Rivals where you're almost guaranteed to be passed near the end. However I wouldn't say that Forza Horizon 2 is really showing how it's done given the foibles that AI has.

The handling took some getting used to but is pure NFS, you now have two setups you can do; Drift and Grip. Grip is very much like a normal arcade game and you have to have a small bit of planning to make each corner in the fastest way. Drift is total NFS where you can blast upto a corner and then tap the brake and slide round it (or into things until you get used to it laugh )

Customization is epic when compared to the last few games and it's great to see EA have actually listened to the fans after dropping the ball following Carbon. You get a vast amount of options and fine tuning, with the added bonus that paint & decals are free to apply, there's even enough decals for your "stickerbombing" fans! A great tool that is now you can save down your decal & tuning sets to chop and change between a few loadouts.
Only criticism I have with it is that you are still restricted on size, making it hard to do unique shapes. For example last night I started doing an Initial D panda car setup for my AE86, I had to stop as I can't make the Japanese character's down the side due to not being able to make the basic shapes small enough to create the correct letters.

Bad points are limited to some of the lines in the cutscenes really make you cringe (though on the whole they fit the theme), 90% of the music is terrible and you can't select a custom set of ingame tracks or even a particular genre, which frankly is retarded. You can have the music on... or off! rolleyes
The always online thing is also dumb, however I haven't yet experienced the flaky servers as mentioned above so can't comment on that. Where it does manifest itself is how difficult it is to join a game with your friends, it took at least 15 mins to work this out and as far as I could tell there is no voice chat either. With the likes of GTAV covering this function very well it does make EA look like amateurs.

I found this article explaining why it has to be "always on" saying that they are going to weave your friends stuff into your game, experienced nothing close to what is mentioned so guess they failed to implement it properly: http://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/need-for-speed...

All in all it is a good game and easily the best (arcade) racing game on the PS4, I'd also wager is more fun that GT6 given the mess that franchise is in at the moment.

How did you guys get your snaps out of the game? When I get home I'll add my cars to a post smile

I forgot to mentioned, the damage does piss me off a bit. Like if you trash your car (which I'm guessing like me, most people have designed their cars to look good so being smashed up isn't great for all the time) the only way to regenerate it is to return to your garage & the loading time for that is just annoying. No other way to reset your cars condition in free roam right?

On Xbox one all you need to change the view is press Y.

That's a fair review mate.

I didn't bother trying to make the Fujiwara lettering for the AE86. I did however try to have the license plate 'TOFU' and the game told me it was 'profanity' laugh

Bit long-winded for the Snapshots.. I got the camera in position in the garage, pressed the 'Share' button on PS4, took the screenshot and uploaded to my PSN album on Facebook.

Then I downloaded those photos and uploaded them to my Flickr, and used the BBCode to post them here, as for some reason whenever I try to put Facebook photos directly into IMG tags, they never appear (privacy settings?).

Surprised there's no way to share wraps and designs in the community, unless I'm missing something?

Hmmm I wonder if I've missed something glaringly obvious re: the view. I was obviously drooling too much over the graphics.

Thanks for the how to on the screenshots seems silly you can't get them out of the game naturally like you could with GT5

I've started a Calsonic R32 and have got quite far, it's just the little bits I now have to recreate, like the "total" bit and the safety logo's. I've got to work out how I can go back and amend a particular layer as the "N" on the bonnet is a different font to the roof/sides lol. Would be fun to sell that like on Forza but I guess that's abit too technical for EA wink

If anyone wants to add me on PSN my tag is Torrentt0 (zero at the end)

First thing I did was turn all music off! EA haven't had a decent music playlist in a game since the days of SSX3.

I agree on the customisation. It's far clunkier than it needs to be. Really annoys that you can't group layers together, that you can't replicate one side to the other and I still can't figure out how you select a previous layer to modify. If I scroll up and down, it just moves the top layer deeper. Took me over an hour to apply the old McRae Focus WRC Martini livery to the new RS when it should have taken 15 minutes at most.

I managed to select a previous layer yesterday after faffing around for a bit. If I remember correctly you need to go into layer view, so the list of layers appears on the right of the screen, then move one of the analog sticks up or down to select it. It's really counter-intuitive.

But the thing about the body pieces being restricted is so damn needless. If you've got a body part on that conflicts with the part you've highlighted then just remove that part from the demo so you can at least see what the highlighted part looks like. I don't wanna buy a dog ugly part I'm never going to use just to see what another part looks like furious

Most Wanted was good.

Underground has a great soundtrack, I think there are two songs on this one that I like, and 4 or 5 marginal ones but the rest is terrible.

Agree on not being able to copy even single layers across to another side is irritating, though on Horizon 2 (apparently the benchmark) it's not exactly easy either.

What do you guys do for performance parts, always apply the latest or go upgrade gradually? My 86 is part way upgraded and is very happy drifting around everywhere smile

They need to patch it so the camera is still fully useable when viewing parts. Not being able to see the rear of a $4k bodykit before buying it is a bit soft.

For upgrades I tend to just buy as I go. However if I'm looking at a part to buy, and the next 'stage' is available next level, I'll wait until I level up. I usually buy all non-power parts as soon as I can, then follow up with power parts later.

I take the view of is the next upgraded part a close level or not? If it is I wait, if its 5-10+ levels I upgrade. Unless I'm saving for a car that is smile Got a Lotus Exige in grip compared to my drifty BRZ

Yeah wtf is up that camera lock? you can still move the camera around when you're applying decals but not a fixed body panel? Yeah that makes sense!!!

I always just performance upgrade my car with the latest bits available. I go back to the garage every now and then to get rid of the damage & have a gander at the parts then.

Like I said I've only got the BRZ still at the moment that's pushing out between 500-600bhp. I've got it tuned just slightly to about a third of the way to the drift side than grip & it handles all the race types fine to be honest.

Really struggling to decide what car to get next though. Was going to buy the first old Porsche that's about $45K because I fancy a RWB model but then I realised a bit further along was an old school 911 which fits the bill even better so saving the pennies at the moment. But really can't decide between the AWD cars, An Evo, R32, R34, R35???? Am leaning more towards the R34 but I really want a Liberty Walk GTR!!! Maybe both, I dunno. Also kind of annoys me there's a '65 Mustang Coupe when really it should have been a Fastback & preferably a '67/68.

There is only 1 Skyline and that's the R32, I have one and it's a joy to drive. I'm currently trying to get the grip setup perfect but I do like abit of slip from the rear wheels.

I'm trying to decide which cars I'd like to fill the remaining slots, so far I have these two but can't decide on the last:

AE86 (drift - got)
R32 GTR (grip - got)
Camaro (saving)
Viper (saving hopefully turn it into a speed run car)
  • blank space* - I'm thinking either an RX7 // NSX // F40 // Supra // 180SX // GTR KPGC10...

Go for the F40, throw an Italian into the American & Japanese mix.

I didn't notice the Viper, is it a modern one?
