OP, it's definitely your Stone Age era internet connection that is the issue. Don't buy the Borderlands: Handsome Jack Collection either, that needs a fking huge download to get started!

FWIW though, that's how it is these days. PS4 is much the same - the marketplace and general layout on the PS4 is better, but the trophy system is fairly naff compared to the achievement system so there is always that trade off. I use my XB1 far more than the PS4 but I've no allegiance to either camp any more. Both require a good internet connection and lots of updates, and both offer functionality to allow for downloads to continue whilst the console is in sleep mode.

You're ignoring that if he'd bought a PS4 he could at least play the game whilst the latest update downloads in the background.

Not only that, but the PS4 installs games and is ready to play within minutes (GTAV outstanding) unlike the Xbox One that can take 30minutes or more to install a game.

God only know what MS were thinking when they decided "our latest console should totally take forever to install a game AND force users to download huge updates first"

And who cares about trophy's and achievements? We never had that st prior to the 360 and those games weren't any worse off for it

The solution is game devs not shipping broken games that require huge day 1 patches.

Assassins Creed black flag, if you have the physical disc and don't want to play online shouldn't be shipped unless the single player is completely playable without the player needing to download a patch and the player shouldn't encounter game breaking bugs.

But series like AC are now annual franchises and that means you have to get them out the door, fix them later and people that can't download the big game fixing patches be damned.

Not to mention you can leave it on stand-by overnight and it will download the updates.....

This would be a start. A lot of games have been released in a woeful shape from the off over the last year.

That said, between my XB1 and the PS4, I certainly don't feel like either keeps me waiting to play something. If you get a new game, bung the disc in as soon as you get it so it's loaded and ready to go when you come to play. As I've mentioned, you can adjust the operation of both consoles to ensure downloads continue when the machine is off.

Achievements are a fantastic though, adding so much to the games. If you're not really into gaming though, I could see why you'd see something as addictive as hunting the best achievements as being trivial.

Um, what?

So basically anyone who played games prior to the 360 and managed just fine without achievements wasn't 'really into gaming'?

I play games to enjoy the game, not to fill endless bars.

Oh yes, collecting hundreds of flags in Assassins Creed, or killing 100,000 enemies in Gears, real fun!

Yeah, take a look at that stats on those and see how many people actually did them. Some achievements are only for the truly hardcore. But I can understand the casual pick up n play style gamer not being into achievement hunting. I don't go to ridiculous lengths for gamerscore, but I get enjoyment from picking up tough achievements - I can see how the less interested gamer might not care if he's got "Dead Men Rising" from Kane and Lynch 2 unlocked on his gamer profile. It's totally understandable how from the outside it might look like filling endless bars, it just depends where you are on the scale. You won't see me buying st games just to wring the gamerscore out of them, yet just by playing through and ticking the boxes as I go I'm ranked about 15,000 out of 40 million or so Microsoft gamertags - I'd be higher if I hadn't logged so hours on World of Tanks over the last 15 months. It definitely adds a lot for the dedicated gamers.

It still takes 1/2 an hour to install the game off the disk and i dont understand why the game says "ready to play" when its still doing the download of the update? Why not simply have a "please wait" message up?

Hardly intuitive for new users.

I've never had a major problem with my Xbox One. It was a bit noisy when it was new but it's very quiet now and I don't recall waiting long for games to install. Even GTAV installed in less than 30 minutes. But I switched the internet off first and once the disc was installed I switched the internet back on so it could update itself. It's apparently much quicker that way, and like I said from putting the disc in to playing the game was no more than around 30 minutes, which I think is acceptable.

The Netflix/YouTube etc apps work perfectly on my console. If you're having trouble it may be worth uninstalling then reinstalling the apps?

Every now and again the console will want to update itself but I don't think that's ever taken more than around 10 minutes. Our internet isn't great here either..

My only gripe really is the shoddy menu layout.

All working now and updates complete. Working well.

Definitely not as intuitive as it should be though - given they should be trying to encourage new users, not discourage them.

I have a 91% completion ratio and find it quite rewarding, as well as meeting some good people through online boosting (in old games where it would be utterly impossible to get it legit) but on the other hand I've wasted my time playing awful games I would have otherwise discarded. I do know some people who take it to insane levels though - one person I know has 8 360s all with their own accounts so he can make his own lobbies!

Deary me. It still comes down to internet speed - Witcher 3 is no small game and that was ready to go pretty quickly for me when installing from the disc.

And lots of people care about the achievement system - a genuinely brilliant idea to get more mileage out of games.

I'm like the OP, in that I have 2 mb broadband, but I can't comprehend why the OP would uninstall the games after getting so far with them?!

The older the game you get, the more likely it is to have a monstrous update required.

It's pretty stupid that it's quicker and easier to go to a pc, open a browser and search for a site that gives info on achievements than it is to open the app on the console and get it to respond.
Never tried clicking on an achievement and then 'search for achievement help' - even on my 2mb it's pretty quick.

Is there any solution to upgrading the XBone HDD ? Running out of space already with 500GB.

Unlike the PS4, it's incredibly easy: Just grab hold of any external USB3.0 drive and plug it in. Presto, loads more space!

I have a 4TB one attached to mine, cost me about £80 but will be enough for the life of the console (on the basis I don't buy every single game they release!).

I don't think there is much in it, really. The gap has certainly shortened somewhat. PS4 has the better menus and user interface, but the graphical parity is much closer now (even to the point where The Witcher 3 runs considerably more smoothly on the XB1). I don't have a preference for either console on the whole, although in fairness I've never seen the XB1 deliver anything as slick looking as The Last Of Us Remaster. The games are much of a muchness, and aside from Bloodborne and TLOU, the PS4 doesn't have any knockout exclusives, but the XB1 does have Halo etc etc.

I've never used the dashboard for achievement help. If I'm doing something that needs a guide, I'll invariably have my phone to hand. That way I can keep a video or guide open and not have to drop in and out of the game.

Ugh, I feel your pain. I have 1mb internet (pity me) and the Xbox/games needing updating when I want to play means I haven't turned it on for 2 months.

I bought the Xbox One and the PS4... With the PS4 I am playing the second the disc goes in... With the Xbox its usually an hour or more after.

Here is a tip - when you have a new game that needs installing, disconnect your Xbox from your router. It installs MUCH faster, then when you reconnect to the internet it will do the patch/update separately - again, faster than doing them both at once.

I bought one for my son, he keeps it at his mums but brings it over to mine occasionally. Every single time I have to input my wireless password for it to connect, it seems to be the only modern device in the world that can't remember a wireless network, it really gets on my tits.
