You may be right - obviously SPOILER ALERT but:https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2017/03/14/mass-e...
First few hours are "awful" and "some of the most dreadful writing. I cannot emphasise enough how poor it’s been"

Seems it has become a sci fi Dragon Age: Inquisition clone. sad.
It does seem that way - the side "missions" in DA:I were appalling tedious. That being said...I did quite enjoy DA:I once you'd got out of the Hinterlands, it did a few things well - I mean, it can't stand anywhere near the masterpiece that is Witcher 3 (now THAT is how you do side quests) but I enjoyed it.Lets hope for the same from ME:A...but I'm not pre-ordering.
played a few hours of the free 10 hour trial last night and loved it. Would advocate playing the single player first as there are a few control changes from the original trilogy..... oh and make sure you sign out when you're done as it's based on time with the game loaded, not time played.

I think a female IGN staffer was a model or voice for one of the female characters in game. So tad biased I'm thinking
That was Mass Effect 3.This time around, IGN have only had first and exclusive access throughout the entire process, including early previews, interviews and gametime before any other site.

I'm something like 5-6 hours in and here are my initial thoughts:
Bad
- Character Creator isn't very deep, in fact you can't change a lot of features you would expect. It is cool how if you change your ethnicity, your sibling and DaddyRyder change too. SE Asian FatherRyder is majestic!
- Faces are weird. Odd animations and even odd to begin with in some NPCs
- No pause menu..... really confused about why or what it would have cost to include it.
- No passive/auto saving in the same manor and you can't save if you're anywhere near combat. I died last night and it brought me back about 20 minutes. In ME3 it would auto save a lot more.
- Squad AI seems bad and they only listen to commands for about 5 seconds. Taking away the 'use x ability' command is a terrible omission. I had a number of times where they would use the wrong one for a combo or charge into a group of enemies and then just stroll back.
Good
- The squadmates voice acting and character development is actually better than I was expecting. When I saw that initially you have a Miley Cyrus lookalike and a young black guy as squadmates I was expecting stereotypes but there's more to them than expected, especially Liam.
- I had an NPC reference a conversation choice from a few hours previous, which was pretty interesting but I'll miss the renegade options.
- The passive cover system is very good and you can actually run near cover now. It makes for much more natural combat.
- Jump packs aren't just a gimmick and add some verticality to gameplay. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong but my character sometimes ledge grabs and sometimes doesn't but it adds something. It's pretty cool doing a big jump, dash over enemies and then do the ground pound melee.
- The MP is still a blast and has been fleshed out from ME3 (but seems a bit more of a grind).
- They made exploring and resource gathering fun and always involve a bit of driving (which is miles better than it was) and shooting (or maybe just running stuff over).
- I quite like the scanning but there are going to be a lot of hidden scannable things in places you won't expect so if you're a completionist you'll have to scan everywhere.
- There is loads to do and it's much less linear than ME3.
It's not perfect but if you're on the fence I'd say don't listen to reviews from either side really and take to the forums. The paid for reviews will always be ridiculous but then you have reviews like RPS (by a guy who didn't like Witcher 3 but did like No Mans Sky!). Or just take out EA Access for a month, play the free 10 hours and decide yourself.
If you like the original trilogy then you'll likely enjoy this but it has much of it's flaws that you've probably come to expect.

I get the feeling the RPS early review was just click bait - there isn't anyway anyone could have realistically played the game to an adequate degree to have got a proper feel for the game itself. A good review wouldn't have generated as much traffic as a bad one so its no surprise it was overly negative. Even more so if the guy doesn't like RPG games.
None of the ME games have ever been perfect - they have all had issues but nothing that has ever really detracted from the game and they have all been great games. It seems the hype train has been in full effect for ME:A despite EA not really hyping it up. Everyones expectations end up being so unrealistically high, even the slightest issue with a game becomes some world ending event.
It must be difficult to release a game of this scale and scope - everyone expects instant gratification these days and games like ME / Witcher / DA need a gradual build up as they tell a story. So there is always going to be a lot of expo and back story before you can start banging heads. Obviously if this was a game from the COD franchise it would start with a minute long cut scene, about bad guys, you being an elite soldier and how you have to kill everyone and you would be given a gun and thrown into it.
I am looking forward to playing it, unless it gets torn apart by a review source that I trust.
