summary here:
http://www.justagamemode.com

in a nutshell - Derek Smart is a dick, but unfortunately every single thing he has said or predicted has come true. Chris Roberts has spunked 100 MILLION dollars on a mocap movie with Luke Skywalker and the X Files lady to try and break back into Hollywood. The whole ststorm is going to implode within 3 months.

Add in the fact that some of the "whales" backing this thing are in for upwards of $30,000 for virtual spaceships that only exist right now as concept art, and can't ever possibly exist in any meaningful videogame because of all the crazy things Roberts has promised, and you have probably the biggest scandal in video game history about to detonate. It's worth following the SA forum where they track developments to keep up

Ive not been following the drama but ive been playing the alpha (the flight model and the open test world is really cool) and have watched some of the marketing content they have put out.

Squadron 42 is out later this year and looks like it might be good due to the fact they have got Gillian Anderson, Gary Oldman, and Mark Strong in it. Mark Hamill features in the open world social area apparently aswell.

So contrary to my previous post they do seem to be spending the money on talent and getting things done.

The first half of your last sentence is correct, the second half - no. The "Baby PU" is a crippled tech demo - not even close to an Alpha. Not a single piece of SQ42 gameplay has been revealed. Not even to journalists visiting offices. There is nothing to show except the mocap adverts

Maybe I should have underlined 'seem' smile

Nobody is forced to invest, personally I now refuse to pre-order but I so so want star citizen to work, for me elite failed to deliver.

You've hit the nail on the head. This whole thing is built on the dreams of people who desperately want a genuine "Star Wars Simulator" where they get to really be Han Solo flying a real spaceship that they can walk around in and hang out in, touring the Universe, discovering unknown worlds, setting down, exploring, boarding the ships of Space Baddies through airlocks and then having an FPS laser fight inside.

People are being sold $15,000 spaceships which they are being told they can have 10 friends inside, which will then be part of a massive, persistent MMO. It's complete fantasy

is indeed the short answer. The long answer is we are about to witness tens of thousands of extremely delusional people who have handed over thousands of pounds of real money for fake spaceships discover that their dream of being a magical Space Pilot has been used to fund the lavish Hollywood dreams of Chris Roberts and his wife. It's going to be quite spectacular

Have they now just not split it into 2 separate (paid for) games?

The game is still in alpha. Im not sure what people are expecting. I do sound like im defending the game but Im trying to be even minded about this, what ive seen im pleased with but agree why anyone would spend thousands on a ship is beyond me when all ships will be available for in game currency. The cheapest pledge is £35 and is adequate, it gets you the game and everything you need (a ship, a hanger etc)

Also the PU-Crusader (which you can fly around in, dog fight, board other peoples ships and has some space stations to explore, comm array missions etc) was only released in December. So what progress has been made since December 2015?

Star marine the fps module is on hold as they have put the first person shooting elements straight into crusader/PU (you can shoot people in the PU).

none. Except they have cancelled Star Marine, are about to divide SQ42 and SC into 2 separate payable games, and are claiming the first episode of SQ42 ( a single player FPS containing 10 hours of cutscene mocap of Luke Skywalker) will be out this year, despite no one having seen a shred of gameplay. The PU that Foliage talks about above, which now supposedly contains Star Marine, is a buggy tech demo using the Crysis engine which is laughably poor - Half Life one had a better physics engine. It appears to involve waking up in a space bedroom having just had a wk, walking through some generic space corridors and ordering a ship, then going to a landing platform to find a bugged, clipped, unfunctional ship which barely takes off. The game then crashes.

Squadron 42 is to be split from the pledges mid feb as its due for release july/august (I think) as a fully finished stand alone game. If you've already pledged you get still get squadron 42, if not then its will be circa £50 to buy as a stand alone game.

Its not a conspiracy, the games finished so its being sold as a separate game. Those who funded it get it, those that didn't have to buy it at full price like any AAA game (but will it be of AAA quality is a different question)

Not cancelled, not launching as alpha, as far as I understand they planned to launch a star marine module as an alpha to test the fps parts of the game, but they rolled the fps aspects of the game into the pu without having to test them separately first. Star marine will come but more likely once its been fleshed out more.

Its Alpha... Seriously guys the games in development of course its going to have issues and not be the full game. If you find a bug report it.

BTW my ship flies exactly the how it does in arena commander, the game was crashing but they fixed it. You know like they do in alphas.

Im fed up of this thread. I understand peoples issue but the game is far from finished. It takes years to make a game.

I think Chris Roberts management style, ulterior motives etc are a separate discussion to the alpha itself.

This is the clincher for me.

Here is a man who has received 100 MILLION DOLLARS of crowd fund money, who is supposedly a video game visionary who is going to finally create the ultimate space simulator for all the geeks around the world who have pledged thousands of pounds to buy his magical spaceships, sitting down to play his own game that he has apparently spent the last 4 years sweating blood over....

It is utterly gobsmacking....

There seems to be an open alpha available for a week if anyone is interested.

Warning the sign up page then takes you to a buy page not a download the client page. You download the client from the star citizen link in the title bar. I've not got any further as they haven't sent me a confirmation yet but it's apparently a 28gb download.
