Best PC games of the least three years
Discussion
So I've just upgraded my 8 year old dell PC to something rather nice- i5, 16gb RAM, NVME and SSD boot discs, Crossfire, Freesync 28" monitor etc etc
I sued to play low res at 1440 4:3, but now run max res at almost 4k
Very very quick- but silent! I'm very very pleased.
BUT all the games I have are things that would run on a low spec 2-3 years ago. The most up to date game I've bought is Mass Effect 3, CS:GO and world of tanks.
What have I missed that were ground breaking/amazing. I am/was a massive half life fan- prefer thinking games rather than things reliant on hand speed (I was rubbish at quake!). nt so keen on sandbox games either- I like storylines!

I'm in the same boat. Had a decent spec PC for a while but only just upgraded the GPU to a GPX970. Also got a new AOC 24" monitor (was the cheapest one with G-SYNC). Only games I have are GTA4, WoT and Rise of the Tomb Raider, which came free with the GPU. They all run at maximum settings with any issue so looking for some titles that will do the rig justice. Will have a look at Skyrim.
Skyrim is a bit older now (still looks great) but there is a huge modding community that have produced some insane graphical buffs. Nexus Mod is the simplest way to incorporate these into the game.
Another game is Alien: Isolation. A very beautiful and extremely atmospheric game; a decent GPU makes it look incredible. Just make sure you keep the lights on as it is very jumpy. Definitely a groundbreaking game.
It would suit you down to a tee Pugwash, lots of problem solving and strategy involved.
Also going to say the new XCOM2. It's dividing opinion at the minute (it is very difficult) but is another well polished strategy game.

These aren't graphical powerhouses by any means, though do look good but seeing as you mentioned storyline, if you like RPGs at all, Divinity: Original Sin and Pillars of Eternity are worth a look
I've only played the former, but both should certainly satisfy on the storyline front.
Something more current if you like CSGO, Rainbow Six Siege. It has/has had some issues, there's been grumbles about the microtransactions business model, some old R6 fans don't like it, but it's a solid tactical FPS.

MGS:V was a huge disappointment. In fact, I've yet to complete it. Bring back the cutscene!
Far Cry 4 was just a re-skinned Far Cry 3 with gratuitous elephants.
For me it has to be KSP - a game that has been endorsed by both NASA and ESA can't be bad. And technically less than three years old as V1.0 was only released last year!
That you can make your own missions, make your own craft and spend hours in R&D (doesn't suit all, I concede) makes for a game that is practically open ended. Plus it lets you pretend you're a space hero after you rescue your comrades that were left abandoned on the Mun because of your incompetence!
Supplying enough fuel for a return journey is overrated.

I found the graphics and general plot of Fallout 4 a bit 2-generations-ago. Lots of content, just not very thrilling. There seems to have been a few open world games recently with lots of content and not much focus.
Witcher 3 on the other hand, seems to have taken graphics to the next level and is packed full of plots. Again, maybe too many side-plots that distract from the main mission, but at least it is less on-rails linear than Bioshock Infinite. Amazing graphics and level design though.

If you want pretty, without a doubt, out of ANY of the games I've played in the last few years including all the big triple A releases there is only one game that has wowed me with visuals:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/296070/
It'll look great on a nice new monitor and it's only £3.

Drop another £160 on a G29 wheel and start a virtual racing career. Project Cars, Assetto Corsa, Dirt Rally, Euro Truck Simulator 2, American Truck Simulator and a host of other older games...all available for under £20 each (plus DLC) in the Steam sales.

I can't shoot for st, and I've never hunted a dragon either, but cars I get...
