BTW single player is fantastic, multiplayer beta was not.
It's not my default option for FPS games, but sometimes I like to kick back on the sofa rather than glued to the desk. Doom isn't exactly know for needing millisecond responses and inch perfect aiming hehe

It was horrific with the controller though; I did give it a whizz with the KB&M but noticed very little difference.

If the single player is good, I might have to give it a whirl then.

The big advantage of PC games is you use a proper method of control, so why anyone would want to play by moving a little stick with their thumbs in beyond me.

Leaving that aside, yes, it's worth every penny.

Plus, if you play it on easy mode (for the older person !) like me, it's certainly quite do-able.

No, the big advantage of PC gaming is scalable graphics and modular upgrading. Keyboard and mouse is great for RTS, hardcore FPS, simulator games and point and click games (Football Manager etc). I use a controller for arcade shooters, hack & slash, third person action (Batman/AC Black FLag etc) and driving games; GTA, XCOM2, Fallout 4 are all games that are perfectly suitable for controllers. They are great for casual gaming, especially when you don't want the faff of sitting at a desk or buggering about with dinner tray to perch the KB&M on.

Sold then. I was hugely concerned after playing the beta, but I harboured hope that this was going to be all about the single player experience.

To be fair, it's not really "proper" though, is it? It's just a ball / laser and some plastic moving around some pixels. It makes games for those who are not too good with a pad a lot easier, but despite me always wanting consoles to have mouse control back in the day, I play all my PC games with a pad these days. I only really ever used my mouse and keys for Counterstrike (many years ago now)

I can't stand the fact you need buttons to move faster or slower when walking and leaning etc with keys. With a pad, how far you press is how fast you move. I always play on hard mode with all aim assists etc turned off (and I play inverted) and I haven't died in Doom, yet.

Until almost everything runs on my Vive, retarded to me is sitting hunched over a desk with only two movement speeds. Until then, I will be sitting with my pad on my recliner biggrin

Well each to there own, but after seeing the dev play the game (very well bow) with a (PS4?) pad for the Twitch reveal, and then seeing the same level played at the nVidia GTX1080 event with a keyboard and mouse, it made the former look like an OAP was playing.

You're talking about two different things here; nobody is implying a console is better than a PC (far from it) and nobody is saying that a controller is better than a KB&M combo across the board.

The simple fact is that unless you are playing a particular type of game (point and click etc) or playing a shooter online vs other people, a KB&M has no advantage over a controller and the controller is far easier to use in a 'pick up and chill' kind of way.

This coming from a guy who has always had PCs and was adamant that KB&M was the 'only' way to play. The simple fact is, if you want to crash on the sofa and smash out some Arkham Knight/Assassins Creed/Battlefield etc, a controller is a nice easy option for the casual gamer.

Still don't know why you can't just use a normal keyboard and mouse with the PS4. Daft.

I think you can them for the PS4, but you pay through the ass for it as it is 'special'...

Totally agree though, they need a plug and play option. At least it would make the idea of cross platforms gaming more appealing to the console boys; they would see a KB&M combo as leveling the playing field.

Don't take it the wrong way, for Batman, Shaddow of Moldor, Tomb Raider, I think you can't beat a controller, I was just speaking specifically about Doom. Doom is a game that requires running around shooting, quick 180 turns, looking up hight and down low, etc. as the monsters spawn all over the place.

Point taken. I assumed Doom would be more arcade-y, therefore probably okay to use a controller. I do remember reading in some of the reviews that there was some serious input lag with the controllers, no idea why.

Still, looking forward to playing it now. I was hoping it would be decent, glad to hear the single player is up to scratch. thumbup

Odd comment regarding input lag, to me it feels really tight, like rage and quake 3.

It was only for the controllers I think and may have been patched out before release. I noticed it a lot on the beta, hence why I gave it a whirl with the mouse, which performed a bit better. I suppose that is why they have beta testing.

Everything I've seen/read suggests this is a very different game to Doom 3- or rather Doom 3 was a very different game to the typical Doom formula. Doom 3 is much more of a tense, atmospheric, slower-paced horror-driven shooter with a decent story and loads of detail.

Doom looks like it harks back much more to the original Doom- fast-paced manic combat, with power-ups etc.

I'm sure some of those already playing it (and who played Doom 3) will confirm, but from what I've seen I wouldn't go to the new one expecting and update/extension of 3.

I'm looking forward to picking it up at some point but I can't see that it is going to grip me in the way that 3 did, but then I think I am very much in the minority in preferring the style of that game!

That's another reason that I don't like controllers - I hate playing in the living room. I bought a PS3 and I must have played on it for only a few hours since they day they were launched. So it became a very expensive DVD/Blue Ray player as that's all its ever been used for.

Each to their own I guess. I love playing in the living room when the OH is out; curtains closed, lights off, beer on the table and Aliens Isolation in 55" 4K glory.

Nothing better to make you st your pants biggrin

2 brand new games that couldn't be more different. Uncharted with its 10 minutes of exposition of the characters sitting on the sofa eating dinner and playing old videogames. Doomguy going "fk THAT. RIP AND TEAR"
