Doom did not have looking up and down. That would have been Rise of the Triad or Duke Nukem 3D?

Doom did have multiple height floors though.

Later versions of DOOM via source ports allowed look up and down, as well as jump. Forget which these days, zDoom or glDoom maybe.

I loved ROTT. Drunk missiles and the hand of God or 'Shrooms. I think it was supposed to be Wolfenstein 2 at one time.

Not ROTT - I got it again on DOSbox a while ago, amazed to find I couldn't look up or down. Or quite work out what the hell was going on half the time, the graphics were so bad.... yet I used to play it for hours!! My lodger and I had a 10 metre serial link going up the stairs between our PCs and we played Deathmatch constantly - HP set to 101, only one missile weapon carried at a time. Missiles could do 100HP max, so even if you hit them fully, you still had to go in and finish the job properly wink
Made me travel sick sometimes though....

IIRC, Doom didn't have proper multiple floors.... nothing could overlap, you still had to be able to draw the whole level out in 2D. I was just thinking about this the other day as I'm currently playing System Shock 2 (which I've somehow managed to miss until now) and it's really keen to put grilles and things in the floors/ceilings so you can see other rooms and hence you know it's got proper levels within the map smile

I love Sytem Shock 2, but its graphics, human characters in particular, were poor even when it first came out. Good thing there aren't many human characters!

Yep, I built add on doom levels and not only did I have to plan it all out with no flyover bridges if I didn't create the next cell in the right order the editor crashed.

If I remember correctly Heretic was the first mouse look game where you could look up and down.

Turns out there's a very active modding scene around this game, and they've kindly made running updated graphics etc sooooo easy, even I've got it working wink

I've just watched some more of the single player footage recorded by Jackfrags and I have to say I'm now much less excited about this than I was previous- it looks like it is going more down the route of the original DOOM- a big, loud, arena-style shooter (which I know loads of people will be extremely happy about), with much less focus on the story/horror elements that made Doom 3 so atmospheric and completely engaging/terrifying- which I absolutely loved frown

He made the comment that a lot of the story elements are basically optional (as to whether you read them or not), and that overall it goes back more to the style of games like Serious Sam, and of course the original Doom.

It will be interesting to see what people have to say about it on release.

I'm half expecting the game to be an advert for the game engine.

That's why it's not called Doom 4.

A lot of games this is optional. For example, I've just finished playing ROTTR and whenever I found a thing to read or listen to I just hit escape and ignored it.

I've ordered my copy from Amazon for £30. I wonder how many DVDs it will come on ?

And I remember the first time I saw Doom - I fell of my chair I was so amazed. It was at work and someone had a copy you could install so I stuck it on my work laptop (a mono screened DX66 486 !) and took it home and stayed up half the night playing on my kitchen table.

Very true, and even Doom 3 did this in the form of the PDAs- full of emails/audio logs etc that gave a ton of extra backstory that were completely skip-able or could simply be ignored altogether. However there was still very much an overriding purpose to all of your actions, detailed either through comm's, or via in-game mini cut-scenes etc. Even if you ignored all of the extra 'stuff' there was still a compelling story behind it all, rather than simply 'here's a room, kill everything then move on to the next' type thing.

But I do appreciate that the narrative-heavy 3 was very much the odd one out in the Doom series so it makes sense going back to it's roots, it just doesn't appeal to me half as much as a result- I love the single player side of games for their story, and playing Doom 3 in the pitch dark on a top notch surround-sound system was a (at times terrifying!) highlight for me.

In any event, it's impossible to get a decent view based upon another person's footage of them playing just two levels of the single player, so will wait and see after release smile

You see, I can't stand all that indepth stuff. That's what movies and films are for. Doom 3 was a real let down. If the original Doom scores 10/10, then Doom 3 was more like 3/10. completely missed the point of Doom.

And as an FYI... the original Doom's did have a story, it was in the pamphlet with the games disks/disc. And after each episode or 'x' nu,ber of levels you'd get more info on the story in a written monologue.

yes

Horses for courses, the world would be boring if we all enjoyed the same thing. beer

I play Battlefield/COD/Unreal Tournament to get my story-free shooting fix. That said, I did spend a ton of time playing UT & Quake-3 against the bots, and stuff like Serious Sam is great fun in small doses, but in general for single player I want depth, atmosphere, and an awesome story- just like a good film I guess, and Doom 3 delivered that in spades!

Where does it say that ? I can't find it.

I ordered it for £30 a few days ago from Amazon. So is that another £10 off, making it £20 then ?

It was an ad on another game on amazon, link here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/b/ref=HOUD120121_DOOM_10?...

Does look like the PS4 version can be acquired for just £20. Can only order from 2200 tonight and in certain geographies only.
