I highly recommend men of war assault squad 2. I've been a massive fan of the RTS genre since C&C and this game is up their as one of my fav. It's a great but tense RTS. Tanks have different armour values down to gun mantels etc. Troops get downed with one round to the head etc. You don't build bases, but you can call in off map reinforcements.

You can take direct control of your troops if you feel the need to. Sometimes the AI doesn't quite like the idea of putting a shell through a civi's house, so you have to take the reins and make that choice for them.

Plenty of mod's including Red Rising which contains many different modern nations. Syrian Army vs ISIS anyone?

I tried this game today; http://www.pcgamer.com/the-spirit-of-command-conqu...

It's not bad, it definitely feels a bit like C&C which isn't surprising as some of the original C&C team developed the game. It's a fun, cheap game but needs a bit more polish as some aspects feel early. It's like a very early C&C without all of the features, tech upgrades and tactics.

I found it fun for a few minutes!

If you are alright playing something a few years old, give Supreme Commander a go.
Supcom has my vote, I didn't much like SupCom 2, but the 1st one and Forged Alliance are both awesome. Wish they made another RTS with the "real time resource" makes it much more strategic.

Good shout !
As an avid C&C fan myself, I also think Supcom Forged Alliance is still in my opinion one of the best RTSs out there alongside Starcraft 2.

Supcom FA gives you the much bigger scale than SC2 though, along with extensive base building etc (who doesn't like building huge strategic artillery pieces or nuke silos?!). It also has full ground, air, and naval units across 4 different factions, and some truly huge maps.

Despite the relative age of the game it still looks extremely good. Details such as individually modeled projectiles and full terrain effects make for loads of tactical/strategic considerations, and the Total Annihilation-style resources (Supcom is essentially an updated TA) give the game an aspect that is missing in many other RTSs.

It also has a very sizable online community, with the game now effectively in the hands of the community meaning balance is regularly checked and patches can be done as when needed without waiting for the developers to act. Games are also regularly 'cast' and there are players of all skill levels, with new players joining all the time.

The community is also responsible for creating tons of new 'single player' content for the game, with custom mods & new missions etc.

If you are still not sold, I'll just mention 'Experimental Strategic Artillery' again... hehe

Oh and it's Supreme Commander Forged Alliance you want- this was a stand alone add-on for Supreme Commander 1 that is generally considered the pinnacle of the series. Supcom 2 was a much watered down/simplified game with nowhere near the following of the first game. The huge Forged Alliance Forever community (as discussed above) is built around the first game.

Does anyone know if there is a way to get C&C Generals to work on win10? I've looked around and there doesn't seem to be much help, I've tried setting it to "compatibility" mode in the properties but like NFS: Underground it refuses to load frown

I've seen on candcnet that they have updated downloads for alot of the old ones but it seems to missing Generals which is really annoying frown

Loved RA and ra2.

I find non of the modern RTS allow you to zoom out enough to control units on a wider scope rather than assigning hot keys and 'zooming' to them...

I did see a game on steam the other day that looked a bit like a modern version of ra with polygonal graphics, might be worth a look in.,

Check out Supreme Commander as I mentioned above- in that you can zoom right from a close up of a specific unit all the way out to a full strategic view of the entire map, at which point the units change to icons (for type etc). This way you don't need a separate map as it's all done on the main screen.

And it's all perfectly smooth as it's done using the mouse-wheel.

It frustrates me immensely in other games now when I can't do likewise!
