I currently own an Xbox 360. Have done since around 2007 (no, its not the original console any more biggrin) and whilst it doesn't get used all that much, I have always wanted to upgrade to a current gen console.

The Xbox mostly gets used for steaming services and playing DVDs these days although I do a little gaming (although I'm more of a PC gamer). The downside to this is that we have to pay £4.99 a month for the pleasure of using steaming services or any online access at all. I do very little online gaming via the Xbox these days.

Can anyone confirm to me whether you can use either the Xbox One or PS4 without needing to pay a subscription? Of course you can use the consoles offline but can I use online services like netflix on either console without having to sign up to a live or PSN account? Wasn't PSN originally free on the PS3?

I've googled but seem to find mixed answers and all seems muddled in with playstation plus? Ive no idea what that is haha...

Cheers

I'm 99% certain that you can browse the web on a PS4 without paying the £35 PA charge, you need PS+ to play games online though.

So is it possible to use online apps like netflix, amazon etc. without paying for a subscription? You have to have an xbox live gold account to do this on the 360.

Yes, it's purely the online gameplay that you need a subscription for. http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/691087-playstation-...

As an aside, depending on the model and axillary equipment a 2nd hand 360 still fetches decent money.

Yes, a bit of a rip off that the Nexflix and other services require XBL Gold. We still game so the included games every month make it good vfm but the thing is useless as a media console without Gold.

You don't need XBL Gold to watch streaming services on the XBO or the 360 and its been that while for many years now - you just need the Silver membership package.

Also paying for XBL on a monthly basis is a great way to waste money - you can regularly get 12 months of XBL Gold for £32 ish.

Every year I buy mine from CDkeys...

There's also some discount code you can get from Facebook to make it a touch cheaper. £30 and you get free games... It's a bargain. smile

Maybe I was confused, but you do need XBL. But maybe it works with silver. I just found it extremely stupid that, when XBL was down, you can't use the Plex, Youtube or Netflix app.
