I'm not sure. The vast majority of people I talk to are normal folks that wouldn't even know what rooting a phone was, I think it will certainly ps off some people but not enough to really harm Niantic. The game going 'stale' for people is a much bigger deal I think.
That's because you're in the UK and that's the norm, more or less, amongst British people. In Eastern Europe quite the opposite is true - people would have an attitude like "why would you even want a phone that's locked to a certain provider?" It just doesn't make sense. Shops sell already rooted phones, and so on.

My son wants his starter Pikachu as his buddy but it is only 11cp.

We have another one at 450cp is there any benefit to putting the higher cp as his buddy?

Is the 450cp one a pikachu as well?

I presume it is so AIUI the only reward is going to be the relevant candy, so will make no difference which pikachu you Buddy with.

Regarding the root issue.....
Just checked the update on my wife's phone (which is rooted same as mine), and it won't work.

So I'm only in as long as the un updated version works for. I'm not going through all the root masking steps that would be necessary.

I've been one single Magikarp candy short of being able to evolve for the last 3 days. Manchester is utterly crap for finding pokemon!! hehe
Chester Zoo have held 2 after hours charity events. Managed to raise £34k from both, might be worth checking if they are having any more. There was a stampede to the main enterence when a Snorlax spawned at the first one biggrin I must say my fitness has improved the amount of walking me and my wife have put in.

Level 23 - 114 Pokedex.
I went to the second one. A strange experience! The only interesting thing we saw was a Dewgong as we were leaving.

You sure you're not confusing unlocked with rooted? My phone very much isn't carrier specific, but isn't rooted.

That is a really useful table. I look at the 1km per candy Pokemon and choose the closest to Evolve as my buddy. You can change your buddy at any time, so I'll switch once I have enough candy

OK - I changed my mind about not installing the root masking software.

I now have a small app that can toggle the root access (Magisk), and can play the new update.

The only downside is, we're going to need to walk 54km to get the 18 Growlithe candies he needs.

Just deleted the Pokemon app plus the one I put a load of false sightings on. Total waste of time. Literally.

If you're on Android there's an app called Pokemesh that seems to be the best scanner at the moment, you have to sign in to some throwaway accounts, more you have the more scans/quicker it is.

Currently charging my Nexus 7 out of deep hibernation to give it a go.

I've got a Lapras, but only because I've got one candy and need another to power it up again.

Yes it is. I'm doing all the 1km evolutions I don't have first, Raichu, Wigglytuff, Clefable, Golem. I have all these as their lowest forms.

Well something funny is going on. He put his 11cp Pikachu as his buddy last night and he has walked/scooted 4 km today. The Pikachu is now at 37cp

Interesting, unless he's sneakily used some of the candies earned by walking to power his little friend up? smile

I'm 2 km into earning a growlithe candy so I'll keep an eye on the cp as we go on.

Edit---- no change to cp on growlithe, Just the additional candy. Unless it's a special pikachu gift, I reckon he's been at the power up button. smile
