Pokemon Go - Don't be shy....

I don't play it anymore so am not affected, so I don't hold a strong opinion either way to be honest. That being said I can see arguments for and against. There is definitely something to be said for the entitlement factor of people moaning about the loss of something they never had legitimately. Beta had distances, sure, but they were removed in favour of the three steps system (which also didn't last long - but that's for a different reason).
It was never possible to pinpoint an exact Pokemon out of the game, log in and go straight to it. Niantic never intended for that to be how the game was played and whether or not that means it's grindy is neither here nor there. You don't get to choose how the game services you based on unauthorised third party tools. You can of course choose to disagree with how Niantic is steering the game and stop playing, stop participating. That's your option - not to undermine what they want the game to be so it fits how you want to play it.
As said I don't disagree that they should've at the very least identified that there was a massive demand for more accurate tracking and released something at the same time as disabling the API. From what I've seen and been led to believe from Ingress etc Niantic is pretty terrible when it comes to listening to their customers.
It's worth bearing in mind also that if they were planning to release player vs player content then disabling third party access to their systems is very important, otherwise these trackers that had only been used to show Pokemon could easily be repurposed to show player locations as well, with attendant privacy and security issues.
Update available, although the AppStore crashed on me when I tried to download it over 4G this morning. Main change appears to be some sort of bonus for collecting lots of a certain type - so that will be pidgies and rattatas for me given I pass a crazy nest of them twice a day (and had pretty much given up bothering to catch them).

Got the update and just about to trot out and see it in action, although I haven't quite figure out the mechanics of what the +1. +2, +3 bonuses actually mean in terms of what you can catch - does it mean that you're more likely to FIND the rarer ones or CATCH the rarer ones...?I've read a couple of sites' report on the update but am no wiser!
Here's a quirk I spotted this morning - seems to be a bug. My son and I both had Pokemon Go running and he turned to me with a squark, "Dad, why didn't you catch me the XXXXX you saw?"
I was a bit puzzled but looking at the Pokedex, it now shows shadows in a number of places representing Pokemon I have seen but not caught. The creature for ones I have caught, a number for ones I have not yet seen, and a shadow for ones seen but not caught. Thing is, it shows loads that I very definitely have never seen - my son didn't believe me until I pointed out Kanghastan was one of them (and I think that's only available to catch in Australia). It's all good but rare ones - Blastoise, Nidoking, Golem, etc - although that might be because I've got all the common ones in my Pokedex.
Anyone else got the same bug?

Actually, I'm now pretty sure it's not that the greyed out Pokemon are those that I have seen in a gym.
I remember seeing a Tauros in a gym and my son being really excited because you can only catch them in North America. Based on a quick google, Tauros is 128 in the Pokedex and that is still just a number for me rather than a greyed-out silhouette.

Bonus points are awarded according to type of Pokémon, they supposedly make catching that type easier but have noticed no difference. You can see how many points you have in the corresponding medals.
Have caught a few Porygon's now, keep seeing bloody Mr Mime's all over the place and generally just give them a miss because they are so annoying.

I have started just putting my Tauros in gyms when I win to mess with people and leave a shaddow in the pokedex.I remember seeing a Tauros in a gym and my son being really excited because you can only catch them in North America.
