I might have heard that people caught cheating will be unable to login/catch more pokemon etc. perhaps so the cheater loses interest and moves on?

Point being catching a million pidgeys and rattatas gets frustrating, and due to being a casual player I'll never see the rarer pokemon unless I use one. Don't have any gyms near me so I never go in any so no harm done to anyone.

I'm a casual player and I have a decent collection with a few rares.

If the entire object of the game frustrated you, don't play it ffs.

Just caught a Kabuto. Just sat in my office to check my usual water Pokemon spawn point. And a kabuto pops on the map about 100 m from me so I go for a walk out of the car park and a 321cp XL kabuto appears. That's my first "rare" Pokemon caught him with my first poke ball too.

Caught a magmar and a ponyta tonight! Loads in town catching tonight
