That's not even the reason behind the refund, but you make a good point.
The majority of items you can buy from the in app store are highly dependent upon app stability and server stability, two factors that everybody is aware have been sub par. I've wasted lure modules, incense, lucky eggs and incubators because of Niantic failing on one or both of those two factors. Given Niantic's notoriously unresponsive customer service and Apple's policy of not sharing refund details with developers, being a bit cheeky with refunds seems like a one way bet to me.

We can argue the morality of it, but the systems in place allow it and if nothing else a sudden loss of revenue might wake Niantic into getting things sorted a bit quicker.

How do I choose which of my pets to level (power) up? Presumably I just level the one highest CP of each type? Also, if I don't battle them in a gym, is it better to save up resources to evolve them rather than powering them up?

yikes

How on earth do you spend that much money on it???????

I thought I was being ludicrously profligate spending £3.99 to get a couple of extra egg incubators! hehe
No idea. It all adds up though. They're just numbers on a screen to me unfortunately!

Who's having the last laugh now though? hehe

Don't bother powering them up at all until you're 20+, as you'll just catch stronger ones and it's a waste of stardust and candy.

Only power up the ones you need to use for gyms.

Since the update I've had virtually no progress at incubating eggs - walked about 2km at lunchtime and my avatar was moving on screen, but gained about 0.3km for each egg. Annoying because I was about 1.1km away from hatching a 10km egg.

I'm feeling mildly smug about not having my phone set to auto-update! hehe

It's the button that looks like three little lines. Bottom right corner of the screen

That feeling when it crashes during an egg hatch.

Thought - better upgrade to new version, might be more stable.

Now stuck in Google profile login loop, no Pokemon for me.

Got home from work, put my phone down and I apparently walked 300m or more while it was resting on a table. Oh well, hatched one of them....

It appears that they have reduced the poll rate for updating egg progress significantly, presumably to reduce server load. It seems to only send GPS data every 3-5 minutes (based on my average walking pace of 6km/h) and *seems* to be doing straight line distances, rather than actually mapping your route. I walked the Inner Circle of Regents Park and the distance logged was significantly different between my Withings pedometer and what my egg's logged distances were.
