So I just had a friend give me stick because I don't have a 2016 car. Firstly I told him I didn't much care, which I don't. Secondly he revealed he "only pays £600 a month" for it. And then I realised...am I the only person who drives a crappy audi a3 that I actually own?

On top of that, the only monthly charge I have is rent, utilities, phone (airtime, not paying off a phone) and then insurance and various forms of tax.

It seems like I am the only person doing this yet I used to (just moved house) get a lot of sneers from people driving around in Golf R's etc....

Some people take out credit to buy a car. Some people buy cars outright with cash.
Either method is acceptable as long as they can afford the payments. Everyone's situation is different.

I own one of my cars and lease the other. Half of myself hates the other half.

TBH most people look at my 16 year old car as a "banger" (B5 RS4), presume it's worth about £600, and would think I'd lost my mind if they knew how much it cost to keep in good nick

£600 a month is a lot of money.

Personally, the last time I took a loan out on a car was back in the early 2000's for an Audi TT. Since then, I've bought my cars outright.

Having said that, there are some stinking deals on lease cars at the moment. I've been researching small hatchbacks for my sister and you can get a Merc A200 AMG for just over £200 including vat.

As long as people can afford to by outright or the monthly payments, each to their own.

biggrin

Nobody sneers at me in my MR2 turbo from their Golf R's. Strange.

£600 a month???

People are clueless with money. They think they can afford £600 per month but they really cant. When looking at things from a big picture point of view, a net income of £4k per month can not afford car payments of £600 per month yet the average net income is closer to £2k PM.

Amazing so many people can not see this.

There is no set way we have to live and finance our lives, some like to spend their money some like to hoard it, some like to piss it up the wall or gamble it.

If he can afford it then so what? even if he cant afford it so what?

Really? So if someone had a job that required them to travel a lot and they were earning £80K base plus £600 a month car allowance you are saying they cannot afford to spend that £600 on a car?

Speak for yourself!!

I Net slightly less than 4k a month and pay £560 a month for my car, this is easily affordable for me and i still save a substantial amount each month. If i had massive mortgage then maybe not but i dont, everybody's circumstances are different.

The real shock here is that the OP's mate is paying £600 per month for a 2.0 A3!! Mine is an M4 to put it into perspective.

haha, I was hoping your post would be controversial, it didn't disappoint.

Not sure though, I think someone on £70k a year probably could do £600 a month on a car, though it wouldn't be overly smart.

I drive a 1992 BMW, it is legitimately a classic car, no one has ever mentioned age being a problem. If everyone drove new cars there would be no classic scene. Imagine a world without classic cars yikes
