Original Doom or Duke Nukem 3D. So many add ons from that era they could last forever.

Probably this - there's always something to do in WoW.

IME what would torpedo this would be the ability to have one machine that would allow you to play this game for the rest of your life.
What do you mean? That either the machine would break or the tech would move on meaning you wouldn't have an ability to connect it to a modern day tv?

I think it would either be something Half Life flavoured or Arma 2.

Still play both of those for many many hours.

In terms of PC's, older games aren't amazingly compatible with modern versions of Windows.

In terms of consoles I know very little but I bet something (tech or machine lifespan) would bugger it up.

Elite Dangerous for me, especially if they keep rolling out the updates.

Isn't that a bit like saying. "If I could have one car for life, I'd have a Mercedes c class. They produce a new version every four years"?

Not at all. It's more like saying "A Volkswagen Beetle, because they still make spare parts and upgrades"

Planetside 2.

It's probably the game I have stuck with for the longest time. Been playing it online for over 4 years.

Eve Online.

I've been playing for just over three years, and there are still vast areas of the game that I have little or no knowledge of how it works.

The original Tomb Raider, found it impossibly hard/glitchy.
Never got round to completing it. Had to use a cheat disc to skip levels. frown

Cthangband for me with graphics tile set. I've lost count of the amount of times I've gone back to this and played it for hours on end, although last stint must have been about five years or so ago so time for another blast. Just googled it and seen there's been an update, that's me sorted. The good thing as well is it takes next to no processing power to run. Beware ye modern gamers, it's a bit old school, but hooks you in if you like rpg elements.

It's basically a take on rogue/moria but with a Cthulhu mythos inspired environment.

As for why, it's badass with permadeath. Lots of unique items with special abilities, random dungeons, sadistic random levels where there's little chance of survival if you're too low a character and multiple character races to play as whilst trying to get to the bottom dungeon level.
Angband would be my version of choice! I've played it on and off for twenty years.

Online games (the ones I like) require the player base to not move on, specifically my friends. If we were still playing COD I would still be playing MW2 probably. At the moment it is BF1 but eventually something will come out and we will move on.

So something I can enjoy alone for hours? Maybe Cities Skylines - but I haven't played it in ages.

I think I'd struggle tbh.
