I have one of these & rate it highly for pick up & use jobs.

I have an older version of the Stanley soft bag and a Stanley organiser for screws etc that goes in an old drawer unit in the house. It means every thing is to hand but I don't need to lug it all every time I need a few things.
Plus a Halfords metal drawer unit in the garage for sockets etc.

I bet that thread turns into a gallery of snap-on tool cabinets full of pristine tools that look like they are never used. http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
--I'm just jealous really. My tools look like they've been dragged through an oily scrapyard.
I am about to 'pull the trigger' on a small bag of tools to keep in the house. My tools all live in the garage/shed. I think my answer will be this:

And a few screwdrivers, pliers, hammer etc. in it

I think that's the same as the one posted earlier, just a lot more expensive. http://www.screwfix.com/p/stanley-fatmax-tool-tote...

I have 2 like that. Pretty sure they were £20 each from B&Q.

So I'm not very DIY. I own a random (not all that extensive) collection of tools (sockets, screwdrivers, and what not) scattered around the place.
Should I get a toolbox to keep things in better order? Any recommendations as such?
Separate mechanics stuff from home DIY stuff. If that means buying a few more screwdrivers or another pair of pliers then it's worth it.Should I get a toolbox to keep things in better order? Any recommendations as such?
For the car stuff you want spanners & sockets to be sequenced otherwise it's a pain finding the right size. Invest in clips, rails or dividers to achieve this. Whether you want a cantilever box or a tool chest will depend on the amount of tools you have and whether it needs to be portable.
For DIY stuff, I prefer an open tote style case with lots of pockets around the edges. I've had toolboxes in the past but they're a pain because the screwdriver you want is always at the bottom. Get a small parts organiser that fits in the tote for a variety of common sized rawl plugs, screws etc. Get a compact combi drill that fits in the tote as well. Everything in one bag that you can easily carry around the house.
