Coolest moments in gaming
Discussion
There are so many to choose from, I'll just list a few off the top of my head...
Dark Souls 2: When you finally find King Vendrick; the change in the music as you see his giant form and what he has become.
Tenchu 2: The boss fight as the Slug, Frog and Snake ninjas was memorable. Easy, but very cool.
Deus Ex: Arriving back in the UNATCO base after clearing up Staten Island, that feeling as you walked around speaking to people that this was so much more than just a shooter.

Always thought killing the Lich King in WoW was pretty cool.
WoW does have some great "end-boss" moments. It's old-school but I still rate the original Ragnaros kill in vanilla MC. Partially because it was the first (and at the time only) WoW raid and partially because he was properly irritated at being woken up Then the 3 linked bosses Festergut, Rotface and Professor Putricide are fun too.
But probably the coolest for me in WoW was the first time someone pressed the "don't press this button" button in the Mimiron encounter. Followed by a lot of fire. All the fire. And then some. Seriously, it was a lot of fire.
In other games, my first real "oooooooooooooo" was the original Unreal when you walk out onto the planet for the first time with little creatures hopping about and a rendered sky. I'd never seen graphics like it before.
Some nice moments in this thread, the Half Life opening was the one that immediately sprung to mind. With the benefit of time I'd say we can be pretty confident that it was truly game-changing.
One more recent one for me was Minecraft. I played it when it was a very, very early beta and I was like 'OK, I get it, but meh'. I didn't touch it for ages until my 8yo son started to play so I installed it late at night. After about 5 minutes of poking about it was obvious there was a lot more to it than the beta and then, very quietly, this ethereal music started to play and day began to turn to night. I wasn't aware they'd added music, or a day/night cycle, so when it all happened it weirded me out a bit.
Very emotive, a real feeling of 'something' going on, which is quite an achievement for such an open and ostensibly basic game to have managed in under 10 minutes.

Playing Lords of Midnight for the first time back in 1984? A full 3D type game on a 48k Spectrum, was a true breakthrough in gaming, well that and DOOM on the PC
Doom on spectrumAgree with the comments about Half Life, at the time the scripted sequences were truly ground breaking. The original Deus Ex was (in some ways) even better, playing it for the first time when it came out, it felt like you were in an open world, unscripted environment. The bit where you are captured and have to escape from prison, only to discover it was under the UNATCO headquarters was pretty cool

Taking out Aetheon with:-
Tank
Wuddie
Tom
Silver bullet
FugitiveMind
Trash
Dalzo
Whitchcraft
And also generally any raid with people from pistonheads. Got to play with a lot of fun people over the 3 years of Destiny.
Remal shouting "look out, squirters!" in a deep West country accent whilst in the middle of a tense firefight still makes me chuckle....But i guess you had to be there
Bonus nostalgia clip:-

Was great to take out the raid bosses in a full party!
The last level of DRIVER on PS1, escaping the police and FBI agents I think it was...insane and I was shaking at the end when i finally did it.
Shift 2 Xbox 360 the 20 lap 'endurance' races with your tyres going off towards the end and knowing it didn't have a rewind button for any small mistake.
Project Cars the feeling everytime I play that game is the coolest feeling in the world, just taking out a car at 6am on a track and driving around till the sun rises.
So many moments though!
But maybe yes the coolest was Oblivion and seeing the world for the first time.

Condemned on xbox 360 for its jump out of your skin moments and actually moments where you jump out of your skin at your own virtual shadow... incredible!
Agreed one of the creepiest games I've ever played. Especially that bit towards the end where you are searching that house with the constant expectation of something about to get you. Skyrim: Escaping the basic start scene with the dragon and the dungeon and then ignoring the advice to visit Riverwood and just heading ANYWHERE. Freedom in a game. 500 hours later and three different character play throughs.
Going more old school -
ZX Spectrum: Remembering my dad setting it up on the floor in the spare telly room. Looking at the tape box and the front cover art.. then watching him loading a game called "Fighter Pilot".
Amiga: A friend had his amiga attached to a monitor and a large set of speakers and an amp. Xenon 2 megablast, Bloodmoney intro and so on. Gfx were miles ahead of my speccy and the sound was amazing, filling the entire room. Score a goal in kick off 2 and the roar... Truly in awe.
PC: The first time we linked two pc's together using a serial cable and played 2 player doom. Great against each other but co-op just brought out so many laughs. "I am going in!" .."yeah mate... I'm right behind you" (was I hell.. I had hung him out to dry lol).
The list can go on forever.

There are many moments in gaming that seem particularly st hot.
One of my favourites of recent games is the intro to Blood Dragon:

Little Richard - Long Tall Sally, With you playing with a big Minigun on an attack chopper. It feels so brilliant. Fave intro to a game yet!

After having my son badger me to complete Borderlands 1 I was finally hooked by the end.
Then I fired up Borderlands 2 and... well... Opening credits!!!!!!

it still remains my favourite game ever with 100's of hours and many, many play throughs.
Borderlands 2 is a piece of genius, as are The Captain Scarlett and Mister Torgue DLCs.Then I fired up Borderlands 2 and... well... Opening credits!!!!!!

However, my most awesome gaming moments came courtesy of GTA Vice City.
Fire up the Radio for the first time. Choose the rock station: Get Slayer (Angel of Death)
Later, perform a jump giving huge air and the requisite slo-mo from outside the vehicle, to the stains of "Broken Wings" by Mr Mister. 80s-themed game, 80s soundtrack.
