Wasn’t the version on PS3 the original game version redesigned using a different engine? So, same plot but entirely different game? (with the horrendous “bullet time” slow-mo sequence IIRC)

These are the original games with enhanced graphics, and the facility to switch instantaneously between original and new graphics.
On PS3 there were some of the more modern tomb raider games including the ones with the quick time events (video cut scenes where you need to press the right key at the right time) however as part of the HD collection, they released the original tomb raider trilogy upgraded. nothing like as modern as the quick time event versions. Ive put a link to the one I'm talking about. Anyway I'll find a comparison and decide if I'd be better getting this latest one. Cheers

Just to chime in, I also got this on PS5 and am thoroughly enjoying it.

I played TR2 on the PC as a child, then 3 and The Last Revelation on Playstation, never played the first one.

I started with the original so it was nice to be playing a 'new' game in terms of levels and story, have stuck to original 'tank' controls and largely ignored the camera with the right stick and although a little awkward at times, have got back in to it.

Completed the first one and am now a few levels in to TR2, comically I am further in to 2 than I ever got as a child I think hehe

The controls 'feel' a bit slicker in 2 somehow, the jumping whilst running seems better in tune but that might just be that I've got used to it again. Very much enjoying the greater sense of exploration from not having the path highlighted with yellow paint on every climbable edge, and constant pointers, maps and hints to push you in the right direction. It's really refreshing, and makes it a lot more satisfying actually unravelling the puzzle of each level. Pretty much every level I hit an "I'm stuck" point where I have to then retrace my steps and work out what little ledge or button I've missed etc. hehe

One small hint for the first one, it's worth occasionally switching to the 'original' graphics as keys are enormous and very visible in the old style, whereas the slim grey key can be basically invisible against the grey floor texture... hehe

It feels like it's been redone with love, there are a lot of trophies too that I've picked up entirely by fluke, some nice touches. The graphics update to me makes it look how nostalgia convinces you it used to look, as opposed to the pointy / pixely mess of 1997 reality, being able to switch the graphics instantly is another nice touch, even if just for the nostalgia kick of an environment or NPC in the old style.

Well worth the money for me smile

I had the same thoughts as I was switching between the old and new graphics. Although if the remaster didn't exist and I was just going for a replay of one the originals then I think I would have gotten used to the blocky graphics.

Just finished the remaster of T2, absolutely loved it. Found I had to switch between the old and new graphics to see in certain areas. Some of the levels were extremely fun, I'm not sure we've moved on much in terms of that. Although I guess it's personal preference! Maybe nostalgia is helping it..

Never knew the add-ons existed, so might try the Golden Mask T2 one.

It's fascinating to see how much can be achieved graphically with what I assume is the same engine but much greater processor power. I also love the atmosphere - it made me realise how little thought is given to the sound of videos games. This seems replete with quite a bit of small noises, and also periods of no noise. The music is still enchanting.

That'll learn me. Started TR2 and making decent progress, saving when it seemed appropriate. Saved a game when I'd inadvertently missed something at the start of a level with no way of going back, and now I have to start the ENTIRE game again. Think I might use a fresh load slot at the start of a level rather than continually overwriting the same one. Bloody idiot.

What did you miss? I think the level skip cheats still work.

The ornate key at the start of the Opera House. I almost did it again because I'm not thinking about saving the game periodically - probably far too much RPG with automatic save on wait and save on travel on. Fool of a Took.

Bloody snowmobile.

Tibetan Foothills. What an irritating level.

I finished 1 and 2, started 3 but sort of ran out of steam and haven't touched it for a few weeks.

I was sure as a kid I'd managed to get the quad bike at Lara's humble abode out of the track area, but despite my best efforts couldn't find a way out hehe

Enjoyable though, and does highlight some of the things in current games that are so commonplace you don't even register until they're taken away from you!

Yes, the bad guy who appears on the snowmobile with the machine guns. As a kid, he killed me so many times, trying to leap out of the way with the M16

Then in my last play through a couple of years ago I realised you could just jump on your snowmobile and drive away from him

It's funny how back then a play through wouldn't be a play through unless you killed ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE

The good thing about Tibetan Foothills is that the next level is Barkhang Monastery!

Yes, I've been plossing my through Barkhang and it's completely brilliant. There are some levels that are just perfectly designed and laid out, and this is one of them.

Favourite moments from levels?

I especially enjoyed the long dive into lava oblivion in Floating Islands. Saw it and tried it straight away and thought 'wtf have I done, when was the last save' ..so when she landed in the pool it was a relief and quite satisfying!
