So playing the game as a thief I start picking every door and chest I see, thus my security skill goes up, every time my security skill goes up by one it adds towards my 10 points needed to level up my character. I might also decide to learn some spells and start to heal myself with a heal spell, this will raise my spell skills, but as this skill isn't in my minor or major list it doesn't count towards the 10 points, it doesn't stop me from becoming a master in that particular skill, it just doesn't really help to level my character up.
Back to classes then - would it make sense to choose or build a class whose 10 abilities are most often used in the game, that way you will be leveling up a lot faster, as you'll be using all of your 10 main skills most often? Or have they build the game so that regardless of what you choose, you'll be able to level up at roughly the same pace? How do you know which skills will be most often used?
You're probably best making a class with the skills you like and know you'll use, in the old game the swords were in 2 categories, short blades and longblades, the thief class specialised in short blades and light armour, but I knew i'd want long blades and heavy armour, so changed my class to reflect this. You'll be given a chance to try out most of the abilities in the training level so you'll get a good idea for what you like and are likely to use, i'd make a class with the skills you like best though, as the more you use them the faster you'll level up.
There are also a few different guilds, mages, thief and fighters guilds each specialising in different skills and offering different missions, you can of course join them all and play as all types, however certain missions may clash as the fighters guild might want you to kill a thief guild leader for example forcing you to make a choice as to which side you stick with, there's always another option though somewhere... Then there are a few other secret guilds like the dark brotherhood who approach you if you tend towards killing people, they'll ask you to carry out various executions for them. There's an Arena where you can make your way up through the gladiatorial ranks in various games of death.
Far too much for me to go into here, but here are a couple of good previews:

Back to classes (again! ) So then, how many hours do you have to choose between classes? And how much help does the game give you in deciding. I read that you can play the game for 1500 hours without doing and seeing everything, so it probably makes sense to choose wisely before getting too far underway
Can all classes cast all kinds of spells, and use all types of weapons, is it really a big deal choosing a class?
I'd say you get about an hour or so of play in before making a final choice on your class, but it's not as major as in other games, all classes can do everything, you just need to buy the spells (which aren't expensive, in the first dungeon you get a fireball spell which sounds pretty cool as it sets things on fire and sends them running around until they burn to a crisp) look at it in this way, picking a class will give you boosts to that classes skills to start with, but after a few hours you could have dabbled in everything and be building up your skills to let you do anything.
The game will certainly give you a chance within the first hour or so to try out all the skills available to choose from, i'd say that find whatever you like the most, build a class round that and then start to experiment with other things once you've got some money built up. I personally like big shiny swords and stealing stuff, and so long as you don't get caught stealing you can make a mint fairly early on by selling it on to people.

Looking back to the older RPG's of yesteryear, whats insterseting is that the enjoyment of being immersed in an RPG stems from the mind. The graphics, and sound years ago, had very little to do with how much fun a game was. Theres a kind of almost primevil satisfaction that comes from building up a character or a small army, and taking it places, through battles etc and gaining experience points, even for us non-nerdy types (speak for yourself on that last one steve )
Bards Tale had crap graphics, but it was enchanting nevertheless. Im really looking forward to Oblivion
