Morning Guys - further to my post last week about my new PC and potential new driving games, I went out and bought GT Legends, GT-R (it was only £4.99) and Richard Burns Rally (£1.99!!). Luckily my Driving Force steering wheel from the PS2 works a treat and I'm having great fun with GT Legends - havent played the others yet.

I've started with the beginner settings and am using manual gearbox - the annoying thing is that I can pass people in the corners, but cant even keep up with the computer in the same car as me on the straight - is there something I've got set wrong? Anyways, itching to get home and practice around spa in my Cortina before the big race - gotta beat those Falcons and 'stangs!!

Any hints/tips greatly appreciated - looking forward to getting to a decent level and venturing online for my first ever online gaming experience - I hope its not too scary out there

How much did you pay for GTL? Play have it at £17.99; anywhere cheaper?

Cheers

the main thing above all else for racing is be smooth on your throttle, steering an braking. If you are heavy handed/footed on any of them then you'll be spening most of your time in the gravel trap. You'll find you can also settle the cars coming into corners with a very light dab of the brake, and this sometimes will allow you to take the car ingto the corner at a much faster speed. Same also applies with provoking some mild oversteer with more agressive braking and a light twitch of the wheel with cars like the elan .Its takes some getting used to and it isnt valid for a lot of turns though so dont try and do it all the time..

Other than that its a learning experience in itself and you get better with time. Best bet is to get online and race in the beginners classes. You'll find it much more entertaining than racing offline. I only use offline for testing setups before races and practice sometimes

Enjoy !

I ended up paying £21.99 for GTL as I hadnt researched it enough - bought all three in one go from Gamesstation... But reckon I saved on the other two so not too annoyed. I think PCWorld has a good deal on GTL - might be worth a look.

Lockstock2sb - Thanks for the advice - My driving style is smooth anyways so have managed to pick it up quickly - especially left foot braking. Agree with the advice on a dab of the brake to settle the car - its one of the things that I love about the game already - the fact that you can "feel" the car moving, etc..

Having to wait for a few days to get back online as I've lost my Wanadoo Wireless CD so cant set up on the new PC yet - will venture online and have a crack at it.

Do all the PH'ers that play together online drive with all the aids off? It might take me some time to get to that level!

yeah we all play on the profesional level which means no aids whatsoever and car damage is on. I'm sure no-one will object to you running some aids until you are more confident - although if you run them longer than neccessary people might start taking the piss

I'll be online this evening - look out for the pistonheads lobby.

Cheers for that. PCWorld do have it for £14.99, but with the delivery costs, makes it more expensive than Play. So going to order it from Play. I have GTR, but haven't played with it that much, so will keep an eye on this thread for pointers. Never played with other drivers ( ), so looking forward to some proper racing.

If you are finding your car slow on the straights (eg against another car of the same make/model), check the controller options and make sure your pedals are calibrated properly - it's possible you aren't getting full throttle.

If it's not that then it could just be the other cars are faster out of the corners - in which case more practice required!

Think that I must need to re-calibrate as I am taking cars through the corners and then they are coming back past me half way down the straights!!

When I go into the controller area and press the pedal - it only fills the bar about 65-70%...

Welcome aboard Skibum, it's obvious you are already hooked

Force yourself to get rid of the aids asap, as its much harder to relearn how to drive without out them once you are used to them. I believe the aids actually slow the cars down a bit anyway, so you're better off in the long run.

Re-calibrate and make sure it fills the whole bar and you'll be fine.

Along the same sort of lines, does anyone else have the problem of the brake lights coming on (and so I assume the brakes being applied) when they lift off the gas? Ive re-calibrated a couple of times and I can't seem to stop it.

cheers guys - itching to get home and sort it out - should speed things up a bit. I'm learning my way through the Cup Challenges at beginner level but will quickly move up a bit. Happy to take the aids of as soon as I can except for the Clutch - that sounds tricky!

One final question. Starts? How the hell do you get a good one? I hold the revs high and as soon as it goes to 1 I shift into first and sometimes it does it ok, but most of the time it bogs - any top tips?

As soon as I'm online I'll head over to look out for Pistonheads and see what I can do!

DougC I think you might have your throttle and brake pedal mapped to the same axis if that happened. Try changing it in the windows control panel so that they are on seperate axes and then reassign the controls in GTL.

Hi Welcome to the addiction that is GTL

Yeah, try and change controller settings as above so the acceleration and brake are on different axes.
Also, to get a good start, map a button on your wheel as the clutch. Rev it to just below the redline, with clutch in and 1st gear selected, slam the clutch out and take it easy for a while so you dont skid off and wheelspin, after a few practices it'll be easy to get a good start 90% of the time!

Dave.

Wow - what a difference calibrating the wheel and pedals made - I can now accelerate past people! And to think that I was still managing to beat people with only 65% throttle (well it was beginner class).

The top tip on starts worked a treat as well - thanks!

Had a few goes at the higher difficulty with less aids on but kept spinning off and ploughing straight on in the corners. Will get through the Cup Challenges first and build my way up.

Still waiting to get the new PC linked up to the net and then I'll be online as well.

Thanks again for the tips

Exactly.

Its only a problem if, like me you come out of a corner fast but pointing in the wrong direction....

HELP!!

Have read the comments, checked the PC spec - all OK (P4 @ 3Gig...) - so gone out and taken the plunge and bought a copy.

Been through the install process, CD key entered etc, then....

BLUE SCREEN!

Not a usual blue screen of death (no text etc) - just a plain blue screen, PC totally locked, hard reset is the only thing to fix it. I've re-checked all drivers - all the latest updates - and graphics card is an ATI Radeon 9800XL, so I don't think this is the issue.

Can anyone please help - there is only so much more of reading your guys excellent comemnts and tips that I can take!!

Cheers,

Dan

My good sir, you need the Starforce fix from the GTLegends Website, scroll down and you should see it. Apply that and I'm sure you will be tearing up the race track in next to no time.
