PSP games - all crap?
Discussion
Sorry if this is a repost.
Recently got a PSP for my birthday and promptly ran out and bought about 7 games in my eagerness.
I think the PSP is brilliant but the games are all shit!!!
I don't mean that they are bad repro's of the PS2 originals I simply mean they seem to have chosen loads of crap games to duplicate although they have done tehm very well.
Before you all scream GTA- I'll accept that one, its just I played it to death on the PS2 so Im a little bored of it now.

*screams GTA*
Really the only reason I wanted one, quite simply amazing to look at - basicly GTA 3 off the PS2 but with new missions. Very addictive.
Roll on GT4 I say
I've bought a few games for the PSP and traded a number of them in for different ones.
Bad
Colin McRae - just pants
TOCA Race Driver - I already had on PS2 so more a duplicate than bad
Grand Prix - cant remember proper name, but game was beyond rubbish
Ridge Racer - ok, but limited and I prefer to know what I'm driving - too arcadey
Good
Tiger Woods 2006 - Excellent, addictive.
Burnout Legends - Easy pick up and play and great graphics (although little arcadey)
SSX on Tour - Good fun, good visuals, havent played it for a while though.
GTA - Completed the main mission - was very addictive, must pick up again soon for side missions.
Tony Hawks - traded it in as didnt have the patience to complete, great game though if you are a fan of the series.
Undecided
Pursuit Force - first impression was rubbish, and havent picked it up again yet!

GTA is great but it's only a matter of hours before you cramp up and get terminal RSI from holding the damn thing.
Glad I got to play mith my brother's PSP before shelling out on one as I'd enver use it for movies on long journies without something to hang it on and playing the games is just damn awkward.

I'd have to agree the analogue control is positioned in a weird spot. I dont use it and will certainly miss it on GT4.
I have TOCA Race car driver, NFS Underground and Twisted metal... I think they are all good in small doses but with the exception of twisted metal they all get a bit 'samey'. Pursuit force is supposed to be quite good - like an updated version of chase HQ...

I initially found the positioning of the stick awkward, but got used to it after a while so it wasnt a problem.
As most of these PSP threads say, the PSP is a comprimise of a number of cool uses and altough an impressive handheld machine, will never be as good as a PS2 or XBox that we have become so used to. However, as a first attempt I think it is bloody good and eagerly anticipate the next one, whenever that may be..

I think all this PSP bashing is a bit harsh. As a technological achievment, it's mind boggling! And to pack all that technology in such a small space without it overheating, or running flat after 5 minutes is astounding! Look at the the Nintendo DS and then tell me the PSP is a compromised games machine! Its a hand-held FFS! It's not got a mains supply to suck dry, it can't sit on the floor, it can't just send a signal to an imaging device! It's all there in your hands! It even has a kosha OS!
Ok, so it's not the most ergonomic thing in the world, but it's not as bad as all that.
The only real problem I have with it is the choice of the UMD. Disks will always be slower than flashed ROM and suck the battery levels down much quicker; the Nintendo DS will always run smoother just because of this. But ROMs cost a lot more to reproduce than disks, and Sony would have a lot less control if the PSP was memory stick based, I can see why they took that line.
The problem with the PSP is the game publishing companies have just seen it as a quick buck winner. They just port old games from the PS2 onto it as 90%-99% of the code will be exactly the same meaning the development costs are next to nothing. Case in point is Sims2 I bought Thursday - it's shit, there's no other word for it. It's absorbed 20 odd hours of my life so far, but 16 hours of that is just down to the seek time on the UMD being so hedious and it not being optimised for the PSP from the PS2.
Apart from GTA, there have only been a couple of games where the development team have been given any time to work with the console to optimise for it properly. Mercury is one, but that still takes ages to load not very much.
Until the publishers listen to what Sony said when they released to PSP, most of the games will suffer. The deadlines for release will get closer, the publishers will go with the game even though it's not really playable, and the consumers suffer.
Sorry.... rant over.

GTA is cracking.
Burnout Ledgends is great fun also.
I'm currently enjoying Star Wars Battlefront II - but the controls take a bit of getting used to.
Wipeout is a bit of a marmite game, but I like it.
I have a RPG called Untold Ledgends (very baulders gate) that I play from time to time.
Really didn't like Toca I'm afraid. Don't know why, just disliked it.

havent turned mine on for a few months now.. .. .. .. ive had it over a year though (got it from japan on launch) so its not exactly a new toy .. .. ..
ridge racer is good but completed,
tony hawks is ok too
ive got like 18 games for it but most are japanese
train simulator is the weirdest, all jap, very odd but cool in its own way, not sure if they brought mech warrior to uk release but if they have, dont touch it, looks really cool from the screenshots but its really crap, you dont play you just watch the robot fight, like a movie, you just alter settings before the fight and altering makes absolutly no difference in when they fight.
everybodys golf is by far the most played, im not really into golf but this is actullay very good and really addictive.
