I set myself up with a login and profile last night to play GTL online. I’ve been racing against the AI for a while and I thought I’d give it a go with real life competitors. Since this is the first time I’ve ever played any game online before, forgive the stupid questions but I noticed the following……

Locking up – halfway through a race/practice/qualifying lap etc, the screen freezes and the sounds sticks. In a race situation this happened for about 3 seconds. When it unlocked I was on the same piece of tarmac but had been passed by 2 other cars. Is this normal?

Magical opponents – frequently, opponents cars would disappear momentarily only to reappear on the other side of the circuit (switch from left to right not fly from Paddock Hill to Clearways!) I punted off a chap in one race as I had lined him up into a braking area, hit the stoppers and went down the inside only for his car to vanish and pop up right in front of me – WHACK! Both spin and lose loads of positions – cue apologies and sheepishness. Once a car appeared to be in mid-air and I drove through a Lotus Cortina at the start of one race.

Quitters – I ended up last in a couple of races as drivers who aren’t doing well seem to just leave. Only 5 cars finish a race of 10 starters with me being in 5th

Lunacy – So someone got in your way during qualifying, does that really justify starting from the back and simply charging into the back of the pack as they brake for the first corner?

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have a look for the 'GTL Cheat' thread in this forum. I've got 2 profiles set up in the game. One where I'm working my way through properly and another where I can razz a GT40 around La Sarthe whenever I like

Yeah GTL cheat is good, bumped it to the top of the forum yesterday

The locking is normal every now and again. Could depend on your system specs, but it usually occurs on the start line for me... You Could try turning the pitboard off.. I think there is an option somewhere.

Magical Opponents are annoying, but doesn't happen too much for me.. It can depend on your connection speed to t'Internet. To be fair, the servers are very very laggy at the moment, so this porblem wil probably resolve itself in a while.

Quitters.. what can you do? Just because they are getting thrashed by the PH massive..

Lunacy - Nothing you can do. Although our league races are always fair, and so are a few others, beware of Beginner servers. As you go up towards Professional mode in the mulitiplayer online races, lunacy does decrease

If you are on now, I will be happy to join you

The beginner servers with the mini/abarth races are by far the best for quick/non-frustrating super fun, so start out with these. It's easy to find yourself up way too late playing race after race on these servers!

With regards to locking - I know the feeling and it's really really frustrating and just aargghh. Not only that but it's very hard to trace too. There is an option somewhere which is labelled something like 'loading data/cars' and you can choose 'safe' or 'pits only'. This means it will not try to load data from the disk (which can cause these pauses but to be honest not usually as big as you are experiencing) whilst in the race.

The game is a little buggy to be honest, particularly if your PC or internet is not at 100%. No major ones just little things like buttons stopping working, minor stuff.

Thanks chaps, I’ll have a play with the in game settings, switch off some of the less necessary visual effects and textures. That worked well in single player mode but it doesn't seem to have translated well to multiplayer.

I’m planning some hardware upgrades too but have managed to lose the key to unlock my PC case so that may have to wait a while!

Also, I’m on a wireless LAN so I wonder if wireless signal strength might have something to do with it.

Thanks for the offer of a race, I’d love to have the opportunity but I’m posting on my laptop in the office, not from my PC at home.

Yes, join us fellow PHers. We have a fantastic private server (thanks Neil) so no laggy type problems, lots of keen and fair racers with a mixture of abilities. Sunday night is the league race, but you can always find a few of us 'no life, no mates' online every night.

The first couple sound typical of packet loss, basically your computer isn't receiving any data from the server so it doesn't know where the other cars are and what's generally happening. It'll try to guess for a while, but then when it does get some info and it has guessed wrong cars can jump around to different places on the track etc. GLT wil only guess for so long though, after a bit it tends to just stop and wait for a while before deciding you must have been disconnected and dumping you out, or it receives some more data and the game continues... normally with you on the grass / facing backwards or something else interesting

In your case there are probably 3 possible causes. First is the server was just overloaded and couldn't cope with all the clients it had connected, GTL seems to be pretty resource heavy so this wouldn't be a complete surprise. Second is your ISP, some are better than others and online games tend to show up bad ones. Your wireless could also be a problem if the signal strength is bad, I used to have trouble with this unless I positioned my PC in the middle of the room! Bought an better aeriel to replace the one I'd got on my wireless card and its fine now.
