The jump in quality from DVD->High Def is not as great as VHS->DVD

Are you sure? I was under the impression that purely in terms of output "resolution" (for want of a more appropriate phrase) Hi-Def was a greater jump?

In any event, both the PS3 and X-Box360 are pretty much pointless toys unless you have an HD display, and whilst you may be buying a stand-alone HDDVD, that doesn't mean that you HAVE to, it means you WANT to.

All your points are valid, but mine still stands - very simply, the PS3 includes features that the X-Box doesn't have, and so would justifiably demand a higher price. What's wrong with that?

Yep. I own an HD LCD telly, and have viewed HD material. Obviously it is stunning, but I am not going to be replacing my DVD library with BluRay/HD-DVD versions as I did with VHS->DVD. Other than resolution quality which you right say is much greater than DVD, the format change does not bring about the huge change in functionality that VHS->DVD did (I'm thinking things like instant access to specific scenes, digital sound, subtitles, etc.)

Yes, I agree with what you say, and I'll still be buying a PS3 though probably not at launch. I do think Sony would be taking a risk by pricing higher than the 360 and do maintain that for most of Sony's customers, the presence of a BluRay drive and HD output will not justify a higher price tag than the 360. It will to the 20-35 year old blokes like you and me, but not to little Johnny's mum.

Wise words mr aspender, of course it's about more than just highre resolutions. Subjectively the jump from DVD - HDDVD doesn't carry the raft of other improvements that the initial introduction of DVD did, so probably doesn't have the same appeal.

I've currently got an upscaling DVD player that can output 720p and that looks fantastic as it is, so I'm in now rush for the bluray/HDDVD wars to start.
I'll do the same by buying a dedicated BluRay or HD-DVD player once it is clear which one of the formats has legs.
But the main problem there was DAC, and it was rubbish in the ps2. The PS3 and Bluray is digital the whole way, and the specs on the cell make it look like it could process 7 bluray discs simulateously if programmed to do so (ok, exaggeration, but you get my point - that the hardware is more than capable of sorting out a hidef video stream of mpeg2 video).

Theres no reason why the ps3 wont be a sierra hotel blu ray player. to the guys that answer that with "cost", ill reiterate the "cell processor" again, its a powerfull chip, and more than capable of decoding the mpeg2 1920x1080 thats there.

As for the roll eyes at the beginning of this thread, did you expect an earlier than end of 2006 for europe?

Everything ive seen so far on the net has had europe down for 2007, so this is GOOD news for us here.

I was expecting the PS3 to arrive here mid 2007 as I know they've been aiming for a Spring release in Japan, as I mentioned earlier this would normally equate to a UK release at least 9 months later, so a launch of November this year is great news to me, perhaps not so great news for my nearest and dearest though as all the money for their christmas presents will be spanked on a new toy for me
