Most realistic driving sim for the PC?
Discussion
I might also suggest rFactor, as an alternative to the mainstream.
Pros: lots of mods, great physics modelling, good graphics.
Cons: "package" software only includes fictional cars and tracks.
RFactor is a mod-oriented game/sim. The physics modelling is superb! However, because it is so reliant on mods, the accuracy of the physics depends on the research and skill of the mod-maker. There are some mods which have a reputation for being true-to-life, such as the EuroF3 mod (based on Formula 3 Euroseries but not the authentic shape), McLarenF1 Challenge mod (based on the McLaren F1 GT), and Renault Megane Trophy mod (based on the racing series of the same name). www.rfactorcentral.com is a great place to find up-to-date car and track mods with review ratings, etc.
A bargain buy, if you're game enough to try it.
