Now, I'm 40 in September & I remember when the only computer games were Pacman & Space Invaders. I stumbled upon this video & I was completely blown away, not only by the graphics, but the sound too. The echoy noise just as you would here it in an Italian forest, the anti-lag popping away. Incredible.

I'm not usually a fan of computer generated stuff but this is amazing.

Now, not being an owner of an X-box or Playstation maybe I just don't realise how far these games have come. nevertheless it impressed me!

that game is about 3 years old now. It is one of the most realistic simulations of rallying available as well

Yes I agree the graphics have come a long way but hell, the games have got more boring. I used to play Doom which was pretty good fun but a bit dated now. Quake was excellent but again a bit dated and Quake II was my favourite. However, I now have Quake IV which is boring as hell and the graphics take forever to load. I have Halo on X-Box and again, it's a little bit boring to be honest as I'm not intersted in pretty pictures, I want a game I can get into. They're also a lot harder to get to grips with.

Still, I have Colin McRae 2005 and that's pretty good as is the Gothan City racing. I'm sure they'll get better and slower to load. I get really impatient waiting for it to get going.

Half-Life 2. Not boring awesome physics engine and zombies to boot what more could you ask for? Yes there is a motor in it that you get to drive as well!

the video does show the 3rd person perspective replay though.

when you play the thing you don't get this external detail and playback, but it's very good nevertheless.

having watched the vid, I just can't think of a performance fuel to fill up with tonight.

Tesco maximum 99 perhaps.... or Shell Optimaximum 19873

With regards to gameplay, Doom/Quake haven't advanced since the original Castle Wolfenstein days. The market is a strange place though, Ultima Underworld came out in the same month as Wolfenstein but had far better graphics (proper 3d, not 2.5d) and infinitely more flexible gameplay, but after one (excellent) followup it sunk without a trace. Fortunately the development team went on to System Shock 1+2 (more of a Quake/RPG hybrid) and Thief (a stealth game).

Half-Life 2 is ok, great graphics and a good plot, but it is still a "run, pick up ammo, shoot monster, repeat" game. Try Oblivion or Thief III, they give you much more opportunity to control progression and don't restrict you to one way of doing things. If you don't mind sacrificing flashy HDR bump mapped graphics, see if you can dig out the classic RPG called Baldur's Gate. There are probably more hours of play in BG1 alone than there are in all the Dooms, Quakes and Half-Lifes stuck together.

you will be interested in the new Nintendo console, the wii IIRC. It is compatible with every game previously released hence you can get the games where gameplay ruled over eye-candy

Yup - superb graphically too (though I do have dual 512Mb 7900GTXs in my gamer rig )

I still think Far Cry is stunning too.

Was a bit stumped yesterday when a friend told me Oblivion was crud, the graphics terrible and the controller unusuable after I told him he *had* to get it for his just bought xbox 360.

Turns out he had it running in absolute basic output mode through standard AV out. With a bit of fiddling the output was raised to component RGB through SCART (DVI wouldn't work for some reason) and suddenly the game became quite beautiful to play. This is the sort of thing I expected out of a PC running below spec but not a "sealed" package like the new xbox. Needless to say he has now forgiven me for making the recommendation...

Ironically the conversation that raised the issue in the first place was that modern gaming, while more immersive visually was seriously lacking in the gameplay department.

The likes of Oblivion are among the few where gameplay is primary and the visuals playing second fiddle. Admittedly it has taken four generations of the game to get to the point where the graphics were up to scratch and the game itself playable (due to bugs). By comparison driving simulations have long been a favourite with the gameplay crowd. The original codemasters TOCA game was brilliant visually (for the time) and fiendishly hard to master thanks to simulation aspect. Gran Turismo has certainly played a huge part in the evolution of driving games even if it is no longer the leader. PGR3 is simply eyewateringly beautiful to look at (as far as the cars are concerned) just a shame the gameplay and simulation is once again dumbed down...

The real question is where did the industry go wrong? When did gameplay get dumbed down and why have we, as consumers, accepted this?

I haven't accepted it. I'm fed up.

I recently downloaded the DOS Box emulator for the old DID Tornado flight sim, and with keyboard controls started a full on campaign
Considering it is 10 meg big, and ran on a 486 but even today keeps me entertained for hours on end says alot about it's immersive quality!

More on car games:

GT4 is about 30% complete and I'm bored, it is actually quite hollow, and GT3 kept me more interested somehow.

Most of my game on the PC time now is spent with Racer (free car racing sim) that has been slowly developed over the last 7 years.
At least it's constructive, learning a trade, starting to look good, but best of all YOU control the quality of the content!

Slowly getting there... in another 3 years when we have a full Ring, and 24 player multiplayer sim track-days and Ring trips in exotica will be fun, and no one else offers it. As it's free we don't need to lisence anything either, so we can have whatever content we like...

Also we get stuff as it comes out, well, as long as it takes some artist to make it anyway

You just got older is all .Been there, done that, got the T-shirt so to speak.
Games were always more exciting way back because it was new and fresh.Bounderies were tumbling every day.Heck, i lost hours to breakout and night driver etc in 77.
Hardly great games, but they changed my world for sure.

Oh and many people think killzone is just intro footage btw.I'm sure it will be a nice FPS, but i have my doubts it will look and play like that.

It is a complete ballache to get working "how you like it", but once it's setup it is very enjoyable.

Also, finding good tracks and cars is hard work... alot were made several years ago or converted by people who knew little about correct setups etc.

If you want or need a hand setting it up, send me an email and I can post a decent current car and track for you to use, and help you setup that controller.

Cheers

Dave
