My LCD monitor can only manage 1680x1050.....

Oh, and downloaded last night, no problems. If it is a code fault that is killing XBox 360s, someone is going to be losing their job...

I've got the samsung le32r74bdx with the 360 hooked up to it through component. Set the 360 to the new 1080p setting last night and it went horribly wrong, had the rhs of the screen duplicated on the left with a black haze all over the screen.

Looked up spec today and it doesn't do 1080p, don't know how I missed it when buying it, kicking myself now.

I have the same TV, but the 26".

They don't support 1920x1080 (i.e. 1080p), as neither do most of the HD models on sale today or in the past. So don't be downheartened, I don't think you missed anything - TVs which support 1080p are few and far between.

Guy at work has a 26" that has 1080p, £1200 !!

(Got the last in stock, shop floor, model for under £1000 though)

Guys,

Any TV under the size of 40" is very unlikely to support 1080 'p' (32" definately wont as you will not notice the extra resolution), some tv's smaller than this can support 1080 'i' though, there is quite a big difference between the two.

For a 'cheap' 1080p TV, Sony have a W series TV starting at 40" and this can be found for around £1600-2000!

So if your out buying a TV and a salesman points you in the direction of a 28" LCD tv that supposedly supports 1080p for £600 tell him he needs more training!!

I will ask the model number of the 26" one the bloke has at work. He says it has 1080p and I am not inclined to disbelieve him.

He said he spent ages looking for one that specificaly supported 1080p (future proofing), I don't imagine a salesman would be able to flog him a lemon.

My sub £1500 phillips tv supported it, in VGA with downscaling though.. I guess compatibility might be higher for VGA with there being more modes.

Not a lemon, but one that actually has a 1080p decoding chip in it.
The Philips ones (37 and 42 from 12 months or so ago) are 1080 native rez, but the VGA/Component/HDMI/DVI-HDCP input will only be able to handle a 1080i signal (and of course 720p).
One TV I know of now, is the Amoi 37" and it will accept 1080p
The benefit of 1080p is a much sharper picture, but the recommended distance for HD is 2x the diagonal, and 3x for SD signals (540i/p).
A 26" and 32" TV will not provide a noticeable difference over 720p. This is why the manufacturers are making 37" and above the starting point - it makes them the most money and the most sense from a consumer's point as they're trying to get the big picture experience without it looking pixelated from closer distance.

I'd say your friend has got his facts wrong, or has been mis-sold the TV.

Finally got a link sorted to get my 360 on Xbox live today, fired it up for the first time this evening.
It said that it needed to download an update before i could use live. Download finished and it rebooted and now i have 3 flashing red lights and a dead Xbox

Just had a google and this appears to be a common problem, Seems its unwise to go on Xbox live if youve got a new xbox (Mine's only 6 weeks old).

What a pain in the arse, i was really looking forward to getting online with TDU, ill call the helpline tommorow..
