Sounds like a phase changing system. Hollow tubes with a wick like substance inside, small amount of liquid inside; liquid heats up goes up pike and thus in to giant heat sink connected to pipe, cools to liquid and is returned to the CPU block via the wick.

Not strictly "water cooling" as the liquid isn't water, but I get you.

Commonly known as a heatpipe. Very quick to heat up and transfer heat along the pipe. Nicely designed heatpipes can operate through various angles so can be designed around other equipment. It'll require a secondary heat sink to help spread the heat away from source and/or a large diameter slow moving fan (to keep noise down) to also help transfer and dissipate the heat.

Yep. I was avoiding the techie term :P

Not sure if anyone has read the reports on the PS3 release - but its near silent and doesnt seem to generate much heat at all. Famous last words of course, but it seems that Sony have understood what the consumer wants, while Microsoft have gone for horsepower without considering heat and its management.....

Xbox360 - damn fine machine and very quick, but suffers with heat and very noisy fans.....

So quiet you cant even hear it in shops, or see it... Its also a lot larger than the 360 and draws more power, that means heat & it needs dissapating same as everything else, Sony dont have a good reliability record for consoles either.

Lot of early 360's did have heat sink transfer compound issues, so much so MS have admited theres a problem and extended unit swaps past the 12 month garontee, cant ask more than that.

I'd personally like to see them cover all failures that were found to be related to known heat transfer issues whether in the official warranty period or not. If it's a manufacturing defect then the machine could literally be deemed not fit for purpose. Still, a full product recall won't happen to sort the issue out as it's more cost effective to treat each issue on a case by case basis.

Mine's lived inside a cupboard for 6 months - gets toasty in there but not had any issues at all.

I did mention that exact phrase in my original post about the heatsink by the way in case you missed it
I assume ThePassenger read this and was simply explaining what a heatpipe actually does.

I've got a Japanese unit and I live in Malaysia, a country in which the temperature rarely drops below 30 degrees.

I use mine a lot, sometimes for many hours at a stretch, and have never had a problem.

Mines fine!
And don't forget about the ones in shops that are left on permanently and are in cabinets, No doubt Sony have been spreading stories!!!

Personally I think Sony have got too much on their plate to start a mud slinging campaign against the 360; especially considering their name is already mud.

As I said I think it's down to corner cutting and QA issues. Which hopefully now the units are slightly more mature isn't an issue.

Sorry, should rephrase, Started By Playstation lovers!!
Still, £500 for a console is a bit of a P** take, and some games could be as high as £100!!
I think Nintendo will win this round, 360 next, and Ps3 will bomb, the Ps2 is too big now, I can't see Sony dropping it, and they are always going to go where the money is!
