ive got both too.
In fact because they are BOTh so unreliable, I have somehow ended up with 2 of each.
Overall the PS3 seems like a better console but the fact is the most of the time the X-box is on.
This is because when a game comes out where there are both versions, the X-box version always has better smoother graphics.
There are some games that are ps3 specific which look beautiful, but the PS3 frame rates just aren's as good.
I do prefer the HDMi connection on the ps3- image quality is better on a projector than component, but the new xbox will have hdmi anyway wont it?
Im not sure the PS3 is worth £300 or whatever. Its just not that much better.
If I were you Id buy BOTH - a used PS360gb - Ive just bought one for £160 from a console repair guy (excellent service BTW- just repaired my Ps3 broken laser for £50 or so in one day)
and a used X-box for £100 or so....and have both because both get brilliant games that are specific to each system.

Has anything notable changed since the first post in 2008?
Not really sure what I'll be using it for; back in my day I liked RPGs and FPSs - Final Fantasy and Quake to name but two - that's how long since I had a console. Just hacked off with my PCs never being quite up to spec to play the latest games at full tilt so time for a console.
History: I had a Sega master system, followed by a megadrive then the original Play Station followed by PS2 - probably 10-15 years ago now. The natural progression leads me to the PS3 but the complaints above about the controller worry me a little, although I guess there are third party options out there.
FWIW I don't envisage getting into online gaming and I have a decent BD player so those features can be safely eliminated from the equation.

I owned all three until yesterday when I sold my Xbox 360, which I couldnt get along with. It was large, noisy and seemed like an older console. However, the control is much much better than the PS3. If there was a way I could use the Xbox controller with the PS3 I would.
As for the wii, yes it was revolutionary when it came out but the games are family or children based. I still use it a lot but now I've purchased a PS Move I'm interestedto see how this will compete and perhaps steal sales away from the Wii. It's much more reactive and accurate than the Wii.
Personally, I'd be happy with a PS3 only with Move, especially as GT5 is out in less than a month.

Right first off i ain't got a clue about these game things and not over bothered, but the problem is i have kids 
The FIL law (79
) bought a wii last year for the grandkids to play on when they visit, so i was wondering whether to buy one of those little things that sit on the TV and "borrow" his console thing. Sometimes it's quite fun playing on the thing but i can't be bothered with all this tech mither and hand controls that have so many damn buttons, i just prefer the old Atari style 4 way control and a red fire button in the corner 
.One of their mates ( a lad 11-12) has got a Ps thingy which they sometimes play on which all seems a bit complicated, but i prefer the look/possible idea of an X-BOX, which one of my pals has.
Online gaming seems to be "THE WAY OF THE FUTURE" i take it there is no cross compatability between the systems/formats or whatever and which would be best for 2 kids (girls 7+11) is x box more mad violent games and psp more family friendly, (they keep talking about little big planet ????) or do i just stick to a wii thing as they seem to be going really cheapish at Argos at the mo, or is that because they are getting low tech/old fashioned ?

now i know what keeps putting me off, what's the average number of games people have 2-3, and are preowned ones generally ok to save cash, they have a few/many ds lite games they hardly touch, worth trying to trade in off a system rather than watching them gather dust and get frustrated at the pointless money i spent buying them Edited by anonymous-user on Thursday 21st October 23:29

PS3 is my recommendation, I have an Xbox, my housemate has a PS3. The Xbox is cheaper. A lot cheaper.The PS3 is better, a lot better in every way IMHO. If there are some specific platform only games you want, that's making your choice for you but most big titles are multiplatform anyway so...

I'm trying to decide between:-
XBox 360 Forza 3 Kinect Sports Dance Central etc
PS3 GT5 Move controllers
I have heard GT5 looks better but Forza 3 has better gameplay physics and sound.
Kinect seems like fun as your whole body can be used as a controller however the Move can be used in a FPS.
Tricky.

GT5 is more polished when it comes to in car visuals / replays, but overall it's not really any better than Forza 3 - I did a race round Nurburgring in Forza the other day and it's graphically superb. :-)As a game to play however, Forza knocks GT5 into a cocked hat in most respects bar gimmicks like being able to drive round the Top Gear track.
As for the comments above about the unreliability of the xBox vs the PS3, have a look on eBay for cheap PS3s... heaving with loads of machines that have suffered the YLOD or usual failed drive faults.

I've played around with the PS3 whilst it was on loan from a friend whilst he was on holiday.
The things that put me off the PS3 was the controllers, they felt flimsy with too much movement of the joysticks.
Game wise, Assasins Creed looked exactly the same as it did on the 360, both using HDMI cables on the same LCD TV. I don't think that game developers had managed to harness the extra graphics capability of the PS3 at the time though.
I think that the only thing now in the PS3's favour is the Blu-Ray Player. The new Xbox now plays games without sounding like a Harrier GR9 (RIP) and it also has Wireless connectivity built in.
Although the PS3 has GT5 and Hard Rain, the Xbox has Forza, GOW and Halo.
Kinect is the Xbox’s ‘ace in the hole’ though. It really is the future of gaming, it has stolen the WII’s only decent trick and improved on it 100%. The feeling of being part of the game is immense and has proved a massive hit with friends who stayed over for Christmas, it is a real party add on.
I’m a bit of a gaming geek and a few times in the office someone has asked the ‘which console is best for me’ question. You always get the fanboy’s rant about one or the other.
It was easier to answer a few months ago before the new xbox came out.
If you’re not a gamer but want to play games, get a WII
If you want an entertainment center that also plays excellent games, get a PS3 (check first that you don’t want to play the Xbox only games though)
If you’re really into gaming and like online play, get a XBOX 360 Elite (check first that you don’t want to play the PS3 only games though)
If you’re a geeky super hardcore gamer get a PC
Now I think that your just better off buying the new Xbox with Kinect bundle and a separate Blu-Ray player.
The newer xbox and kinect gives you most of what the other two consoles give and also it's special xbox only games
I don’t think the PS3 beat the 360 on the gaming front, maybe overall as an entertainment system but not for pure gaming
I bet Sony won’t come second in the race to get the next console on the shelves, that 1 year delay behind the 360 really hurt the PS3. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the PS4 out before next xmas with a 720 in the pipeline at the same time. My one big hope is that Microsoft perfect the Kinect system so it detects the slightest head movement like the Track-IR system I play Arma 2 with , then the console first person shooters are going to be truly immersive.

Hi chaps, I have an XBOX360 (about a year old now with 60gb HDD) with kinect(which I got when it came out). When the PS3 came out the Blu-Ray built in really made me seriously consider buying one, but I noticed Amazon are knocking out Toshiba Bluray players for £60 now so that wouldn't make me want one as much if I was to consider one now. I am no fanboy of the Xbox, and had a PS2 and Xbox previously, and when browsing in HMV I always like to look at what the PS3 has to offer to see if it could entice me into buying one. As of today, there is nothing there that tempts me. GT5 looks ace, but Forza 4 is out this year. I can't see much of a difference graphically to sway me either. Although, Forza using Kinect? Sounds ridiculous to me.
I'm not saying to anyone 'dont buy a PS3' though, thats ridiculous. Some people say its better for racing games and such, whereas I prefer RPG style games generally. I think Sony fumbled a bit with its excessively high initial price though.
Regarding Kinect, I don't think it the future of gaming yet to be honest - most games for it are stinking piles of turd. Dance Central is brilliant and both me and the missus love it. The missus is also fixated with the kinect adventure disk which comes with it - honestly, never seen her do so much exercise!
We also bought the 'Your shape fitness evolved' disk (can't really call it a game) and I am finally getting off my fat arse and exercising. Other than that there are no decent other games. I think it could come into its own if they released a 'Nintendo' style 'mini-games' thing for it (there is a dire 'pub games' disk fo rit, but that's not what I mean) like Marioparty. That is one area the XBOX is weak and the Kinect could be good. It remains to be seen if the kinect is a success or falls on its arse, but it badly needs decent games!
