I totally disregarded this game out of hand when I read it was an RPG, as I'm really not interested in RPG's. Now I've just looked at some vids and it looks more like a FPS with explore type elements and the sort of thing I'd play.
Whenever I see 'RPG' the first thing that springs to mind, apart from rocket propelled grenade, is that I think it's going to be some clunky turn based game with restricted movement in the environments. If other traditional FPS fans will vouch for Fallout 3, I think I'll buy it.

The distinction between RPG and FPS is very blurred these days.
Fallout3 is a FPS in the sense that you do a lot of combat in the first person, and a RPG in the sense that you play a character who can be levelled up, there is interaction with NPCs and there are quests.
If you liked Bioshock, you'll like Fallout3

This is a different game altogether, it's really an FPS but with a story and character elements to it. The great thing is you can pretty much choose how to play it, if you just feel like mowing down everything that moves you can, or you can play along and get into the story (which is ultimately more rewarding).
This and Oblivion can be a little difficult to get into while you learn the ropes (Oblivion is harder due to the levelling system, F3 is simpler in that respect), but they're definitely worth the effort.
I had a look at Oblivion and Dark Messiah, which both look like quite good fun also, the playable environment on Oblivion looks enormous. I think my view of RPG's has been tainted by childhood memories of watching mates play Games Workshop style board games and thinking it was the dullest thing on earth.
I'm a big MW fan but I find COD games lacking in some ways due to the linear way that the levels are structured, any changes of directive seemed to be staged rather than implemented by the effects of your soldiering, the free roaming and exploration in F3 on the other hand seems like a nice break from this. The large environment also appeals! When I get around to it I'll be picking up a copy of F3.

So how good is Oblivion, is that the Elder Scrolls game? I have now done all I can find in Fallout 3 and need a new game.
One of the greatest games ever madehttp://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
After not playing this for ages and long term lending my original copy to my brother, I picked up the GOTY Edition for £25 from Game yesterday.
Id played through the main game and Broken Steel but none of the other expansions so the £25 seemed like good value for 4 new expansions.
Even after only a few hours play I am totally immersed again, just doing Operation Anchorage at the mo.
I did consider starting a fresh but the thought of navigating all those subways and everything else put me off, instead I've dumped Fawke's and Dogmeat off at the house along with most of my weapons to make it a bit more challenging.

Yep, great value for money that kit.Id played through the main game and Broken Steel but none of the other expansions so the £25 seemed like good value for 4 new expansions.
I suggest you don't do Point Lookout unless you use your better weapons. You can however do the Pitt whenever you want, as you lose all your weapons...

The foes in Point Lookout are equivalent to Super Mutants in toughness, even though they look like Raiders. So if you're levelled up enough not to be afraid of Muties then you'll be fine.
Point Lookout is probably the best of the 'glorified side-quest' DLCs. I liked it a lot.

whats the best order to do the expansion packs?
I don't think it makes a huge amount of differenceI like to think of Broken Steel as a continuation of the main quest as it moves the storyline on.
Treat all the other DLCs as side-quests - in other words, do as you see fit or wish.

I'm playing through again now, but don't think its worth me buying the expansions now as red dead redemption is out next week and i won't give this the time of day once that lands on my doorstep.
I'm quite disappointed that RDR isn't getting released on the PC. It looks like quite a good game.I do like the old 'Wild West' settings.
Still.....not long til New Vegas
