Ouch!! Awesome post Tonsko! thumbup

I have never read the detail on the Guiding Hand heist either, I'd just heard the rumours in passing, almost like urban legends. A true act of utter cruelty, and long may Eve be a place where it can happen!

I'm going to be entering the ISGC racing league season 7 when it starts up... anyone else here been involved in that?

Ok - so I've signed up and will download when I get home tonight - there is no way I'm going to put on my work laptop! That would be a disaster waiting to happen.

Just had a quck scan through the FAQs and playing guides - does look rather complex!

Think I'll find a friendly Corp once I've worked through the tutorial.

I was in the middle of dealing with some Sansha pirates when it came, when I looked to my left. Hey! The local system HUD was flashing away quietly. There's 2 reds in the system! How long have they been there? How am I doing? 0% shield, 50% armour, with reppers going like the clappers - nothing to worry about - but definitely not a situation to be entering hostilities with an enemy pilot!
Never ever ever rat when there are enemies in local

In most systems people will find you and warp to your belt within 10-60s

Always be aligned to a safespot (make one near the sun so you know where to align to) - have local open and pinned transparent in a second window - as soon as you see enemies come in, warp to your safespot.

I remember getting my first cruiser - an Osprey - and proudly flying it down to our area of space from empire (so that it cost me 2-3m isk less..). Fitted it and flew it to a belt only to have two hostiles find me and wipe me out in seconds hehe

Later on I lost another Osprey and a Badger II (I was determined to get my crokite) to belt rats. Oops.

Well - in true Dubai disappointment - I was hoping to have a start on it tonight by my so called 4mb line is downloading at a rapid 15kb frown

That's looking at a 13hr download for the basic stuff.

Luckily I only pay 81 quid a month for the pleasure.

fking ripoff merchants- don't you just love a monopoly.

Oh - in the time it's taken me to type this it's dropped below 9kb and a 22hr download.

A story from the other side of the fence mid to late 2007:

We had a medium sided (about 25) gang of Heavy Assault cruisers and Recon ships (plus a few interceptors) (We being INFOD and at the time part of The Church. Alliance) We'd headed out through Tau Ceti Federation, Goon Fleet and Red Alliance space. We had a good night, over 30 ship kills and 20 or so pods, mostly picking off careless NPC'ers (people shooting NPC ships to make money) hacking them apart in seconds. We set our destination for home and would pick off any targets of opportunity on the way back, and hopefully meet a gang of equal size on the way back so we could get a decent fight. We get to a system in Goon Fleet space (about 15 jumps from home at this point) and the scout announces that he'll have a look in a neighbouring system off our route. The FC says Ok but be careful, after 5 minutes (comms were on a voice client so I don’t have the exact words):

Scout: There’s a Caldari Carrier ratting in a belt it’s a Goon Fleet pet alliance, want me to tackle it.
Fleet Commander (FC): Yes get to it were on our way.
FC: Okay guys move to the gate and wait.
Scout: One point.
FC: jump guys.

We jump into the system and warp to the belt, my heart is in my mouth at this point as we have no idea whether it is a Goon Fleet trap.
The scout has a bunch of basic tech one medium drones chasing him around (I am thinking that this is a trap now, no carrier pilot would have Tech 1 light drones that’s just embarrassing). We start picking the drones off, he eventually stops launching them (not because he had run out or because he is jammed, but because it was futile as we kept killing them).

FC: It can’t be a trap we’d know about it by now.
Gang member: I’m thinking the same.
FC: this is going to be a hard kill if it’s properly tanked, I’ll call in support. (we’d been out all night and didn’t know if our ammo would last)

After about 5 minutes of shooting he is bleeding Armour, it is obvious that the guy is a noob that either bought his char and carrier for ISK made from selling game time codes (totally legitimate way to make ISK if you don’t have allot of time) the carrier is repairing both armour and shield we now are guessing it is tanked using…wait for it…Battle Ship class fittings, on a capital ship.

Local Chat: -
Carrier Pilot (CP): please let me go.
FC: No be quiet and die.
CP: Please I’ll pay you.
FC Okay pay me 2 billion ISK (if he had have paid we would have left him be and gone on our way)
CP: I only have 300mil
FC: mwahahahahaha then you are going to die

On Comms: -
FC: Interdictor pilot get ready with the bubble we’ll nail his pod as well
Interdictor Pilot: Okay.

By this point he is at half armour and still begging, we don’t normally take the mickey too much but this guy was whining in local for help so much we just had to.

Local Chat: -
CP: HELP ME PLEASE SOMEONE MY CARRIER IS GOING TO DIE
Gang member 2: never mind you can buy a new one
CP: I can’t I don’t have the ISK
ME: you shouldn’t fly a ship you can’t afford to loose.
CP: How did you find me, you can’t find people in belts (this was the thing that told us he was a noob)
FC: we used the scanner, I think you should look it up on the forums.

At this point the local goon fleet members stated spamming local chat with garbage which was quite funny, he was into half structure by this point. The carrier was going down fast now.

CP: PLEASE NO, LET ME GO, PLEASE.
FC: No
Me: This is going to hurt you allot more than me.
CP: NOOOOOO, PLEASE DON’T ITS ALL I HAVE.
FC: Wupz, that’s your problem not ours.

The carrier now at 20% structure was extremely nerve wracking by this point we’d been in the system 12 minutes, we expected to be attacked but still nothing, he was still pleading as his structure neared it’s last few hit points.

10%...Boooom, cue a huge very pretty explosion as the carrier becomes a smouldering wreck, the Interdictor bubble goes up and the pod is picked off by an interceptor before I can even get a lock on him.

The wreck is looted, and we find what we were expecting, battle ship class fittings and a few other odds and ends, and a truck load of tech one small medium and large drones of various types, no tech 2 drones and no fighter drones.

A good kill for us, not so much for the noob who was now in local (clone bay in one of the stations) swearing revenge at us, we laughed and left. The support we had requested was still 5 jumps away. No goon fleet support/trap showed up and we all made it back intact, though most of us had very little ammo left (I had to load some of my guns with the cheaper ammo I keep for swatting NPC’s whilst we wait on gates).

It sounds cruel and to the person involved it probably was. But piracy is a part of eve love it or loath it, pay a ransom and you will live (well to us anyway some people will take your ISK and kill you anyway, though sometimes we just go killing and don’t even say anything. But at the end of the day it is pixels on a screen, and if I’ve lost my ship…well I’d have bought another one.

We did loose 10 or so ships to red alliance a month or so later. We bubbled a Battle cruiser on a gate (it was a bait ship) and proceeded to kill it. A red Alliance Titan warped to the gate (Erebus) and fired off it’s Dooms Day device, I and most of the gang lost our ships, never mind I had several spare's.

A tale of the first 1000+ ship battle (incidently my first experience of null space warfare - what a way to get started!)

Keyword; Strategy.
We play chess in game, we plan for our opponents move, we try to pre-plan on what to do when it happens, and with different scenarios. There's nothing we haven't seen, we seen it all, in various places, all over New Eden.

Monday night was no different then other nights. We weren't actually expecting a fight.... as the night grew older, we saw that we might get one, the enemy is amassing in 15w, local goes up to 550 in 15w before the showdown while we are preparing to kill and siege a hostile tower. We get reports of 100+ hostile capitals, and people start waking up from their slumbers.... we count a total of about 7-800 hostiles... this is going to be a slugfest. We have 300-350 active pilots.

The hostile tower is killed.

Apart from the regulars in NC, we are seing new faces, TCF, KIA, Daisho and Rebellion has turned up, in huge numbers. Hostiles are streaming into 15w... We watch them set up, and get ready. A few key elements lets us decide what to do. They are splitting fleets, one to travel, one to jumpbridge.

This is where NC et al lost the battle. Before even jumping one ship, they have already lost. The pre-planning and the strategy they have chosen will not work, regardless of numbers.

The gameplan for NC is simple, jump in a boatload of people into M-O using regular gate, as a distraction to bridging people and capitals in. KIA/Daisho/TCF/Rebellion are chosen for this. On the incoming gate, all our supports are parked, and, a large t2 bubble. We also have 5 titans on standby, for various tasks.

It begins.

200+ pilots jumps into M-O using the regular gate, they are slaughtered by the support fleet as they load inside the bubble. As their battleships jumps in, two titans prepares... and a hostile cyno goes off at the gate, 300km below it. Our titans are setup for 200 above it. Our supports warps to cyno, and titan decloaks and fires while second titan warps in to fire the second doomsday. Jackpot. Our support lives, while all hostile fleet, are promptly wasted. Our supports starts killing cynoes below the gate as the NC capitals jumps in at the gate. Second cyno goes up at a NC pos, and carriers are deployed to that cyno along with our battleships. NC are bridging a new boatload of fleet in, this time the NC regulars.

Fights all over the system, carriers are winning their fight at the NC pos, supports are holding down the enemy capitals, and our capitals are ordered to warp to the hostile capitals....
Our battleships are sent to sniper spot above gate, to deal with any incoming remaining fleet.

"Capitals, your primary is....Beastie Boy" 5 minutes pass.

The node collapses and dies. M-O have 1000+ in system, and we have been fighting a good 15-30 minutes when the node crashes.... No capitals were killed before the node crash, but, NC lost the fleet that gated in, they lost the main bulk of the fleet that bridged in, and whatever is left... is 100+ capitals. The waiting game starts.. the node dies a couple of more times before it finally starts loading. It has taken the server about 2 hours to understand what it should do, and we send EVERYONE onto the gate, we will NOT stand down from this. Whoever runs first, dies horribly.

After the first breathtaking 15 minutes before we get people properly loaded... its anyones guess who is going to die badly today.

Its a turkeyshoot.

50+ capitals dies a agonizing death while they are trying to run away.

You lost this before it even started NC. Come prepared next time.
It was excellent - even if the node did crash under the strain!

To be honest I think it was during or at the very beginning. I think we managed nearly half an hour of combat watching local climb and climb, the node ultimately died after it reached the thousands point, but not after some lovely lag free fighting.

I left soon after so haven't experienced the improvements that are touted over this "stackless I/O" upgrade thing.

I haven't played it when it wasn't there, so I've no frame of reference. From what the others were saying in that 700 fleet fight though, they said it behaved pretty well. There was still lag of course, but they all felt it was a definite improvement.

That massive battle was the first one after they introduced the stackless I/O and 64 bit nodes. They have been using solid state disks for quite a bit longer.

Before hand it would be pretty much impossible to fight with more than 500 in system, but now battles that sized are reasonably playable. There have been some big performance increases recently, and they seem to be making it a priority so hopefully more will be coming.

Yeah performance has improved massively since the stackless IO and various other optimisations, plus the devs can allocate extra hardware to systems that are expected to get big fleet fights. 1100 people in local and it has been playable!

First you need to decide what you want to do. It is better to specialise {(at least in teh beinging at least a little so you get a focessed group of skills. Dont' spread yourself too thinly, and at the same time, think about doing rounds of learning skills - they make everything faster.

Do you want to trade, mine, mission or PvP? Initially your character selection will prime you for one of those - Minmatar are good warrors, Caldaris make good tradesmen etc.

Once you have a vague idea, ask around in the help channels.
