At last!! My spawning tower is finally complete! It starts at ~y = 100, and goes all the way up to y = 240, which is the limit of mobs spawning. There are still a few little details to build, like the observation platform at y= 210, so that the entire tower is within the 180 block spawning radius, and the ground isn't, but that's a quick little fun project. This was quite a slog!

There still isn't a worse feeling than going caving for a few hours to then meet your end in a lavery mess. I had probably 400 coal and redstone 200 iron and 15-20 diamonds! I'd only started playing again last night after a month or so out on a new map too...

ceebmoj said: Excellent. What does it do? It's a haven for mobs to spawn, who then get washed towards the central hole, where they fall to a messy death, and I can then pick up all the stuff they drop. Already got about 8 times the gunpowder it took the last three months to collect! :-)

Mob grinder towers are great fun, especially in Equivalent Exchange worlds/servers. They exist purely to spawn mobs, which then randomly walk around, drop into a water stream, and then get dropped >30 or so blocks. They are then guaranteed to die when they hit the ground, and generate a huge amount of stuff. Normally string, arrows, meat, gunpowder etc isn't that useful, but Equivalent Exchange allows you to exchange it for other stuff.
The main reason is because its very satisfying seeing a large number of mobs dying. You have to make sure all the caves etc in the area are lit or filled in though, otherwise the spawn rate is much slower.

Anyone else not played this for a good 6 months who is now looking at this thread and thinking, jesus christ i'm going to have to go on a course to learn this game, i used to love building and using redstone to make calculators/simple computers but now it looks mental, spawning towers/apothecary/other things i don't understand like the yellow and green spunk balls.

I've just started back up on it this last week.. getting obsessed again I think. Although I could really do with a mob grinder. Any tips for finding spawners? I haven't even found any spider ones in mineshafts either! Usually easy to bump into those!

My nine year old son wants a Minecraft account. My 18 year old son plays via a friend's account, and my ten year old son has a passing interest in it too.
Nine & ten year old are very clever boys, nine year old skipping next year at school, etc, etc.
If I make this investment (they can share the account) will it be detrimental to his health and education? Or will he become an engineering genius?
Advice please.

It is basically the computer equivalent of Lego, with Lego Technic / Mindstorms.
