World of Tanks
Discussion
My son and I rolled out our Matilda IV's in a platoon last night. To my shame, all I did in the game was to land one hit for 2 damage and the kill (plus some spotting and tracking xp). My son's amazing - he doesn't bother with crew training, consumables or extra equipment and YOLO's his way around and regularly is in the top three for damage. I, on the other hand, research the forums, watch youtube videos and make sure I spec. the tank "correctly". And he still does better than me. That's the COD generation for you, I suppose.
Mind you, I do produce the odd masterclass in the Pak40 just to keep him in his place.

After some practice, I've now got quite good at semi-indirect fire with the cruiser II, which is a truly excellent, and comic feature for some maps.
As the 3.7" howitzer has a flight time and trajectory similar to that of arty, without the strategic view mode, it's possible to use this to shoot over terrain, to the consternation of the target.
You need a scout to spot the targets, then zoom out as much as possible. This changes the view point a little, which can allow you to lock on to targets that you wouldn't be able to select when zoomed in.
Once locked, zoom back in and confirm that you're apparently shooting at a ridge, wait for the reticle to settle fully, then let fly.
Obvious, like all howitzer shots, you need luck, but it allows you to fire without being exposed to anything except arty.
Best on maps like Prokhorovka and Malinovka, where there's gentle undulating terrain.

Oooh, I'll have to try that, thanks.
I've also got the Cruiser II (thanks to recommendations here) and managed some incredible long range derps on Prokhorovka. I've got 3 Top Guns and 2 Ace Tankers with it so far.
It's a technique best suited to long range derping, as the arc isn't that great at shorter ranges. Comedy when you do pull it off; managed 2 derps in the first minute on Malinovka last night, and another 2 using the 'almost arty' technique.I've also got the Cruiser II (thanks to recommendations here) and managed some incredible long range derps on Prokhorovka. 8 Top guns, no idea on number of Ace tankers. 288 battles, with 60% win rate.
Climbing the hill on Himmelsdorf is best, though; you can normally count on getting charged by someone who doesn't know any better:
PzIC last night: dakkadakkadakkadakkadakka
Cruiser II: BLAM
...
...
PzIC : da Fuq?
Cruiser II : The power of derp compels you
PzIC : ah.
While we are on the subject of Derping I just made a film in tribute to the King of derp, the mighty KV2.

Well I bought a Cruiser II last night on the strength of the above comments. Still on the pompom at the moment though with a few decent wins needed to get the XP for the derp gun.
Starting to feel a bit more love for the KV-3 now than I've got a semi decent gun on it instead of the peashooter it came with, needs a better engine though as it's dog slow and thus not as good as the IS yet.
I've started to play the KV-1S more like a medium which seems to be working for me too, had a couple of good games last night by heading round the side of the map and clobbering some lights and mediums a tier above me.

The thing to remember about the KV1-S is although it's a "heavy", it really can't be played that way, unless against much lower tier tanks. Although the turret has decent armour, the rest is nothing special. Neither does it have big hit-points. Couple that with the 20sec reload and you are committing suicide by trying to brawl with it. It has good speed so as you say, play it as a medium. It can work well in flanking but make sure that you can kill with your first shot. And again as a medium, make sure that you have cover to return to after firing, whilst you reload.Starting to feel a bit more love for the KV-3 now than I've got a semi decent gun on it instead of the peashooter it came with, needs a better engine though as it's dog slow and thus not as good as the IS yet.

After I bought the KV-3, I played a few rounds in it, before reaching the sickening conclusion that I would need to free xp the tracks and all the engines to make it playable. After that, I found it so painfully slow, that I still couldn't bring myself to play it, for about a year.
Finally came back to it and slogged through it; now working on the IS, I find I preferred the KV-3....
I had to sit back and snipe in this game as my ping was all over the place. Shows what is possible if you choose a good location over-looking your flag, with good line of site and some cover. I had killed 2 tanks and suffered all my damage before I relocated. No one even fired a shot at me after that, so pretty sure that they hadn't even located me during my next 10 shots.
The community in this game never fails to disappoint. Had a great game in my Jackson in a T8 match, me and a T29 took the east path on Mountain Pass but he got blown up in the process which was apparently my fault! What did he expect me to do; come charging out in my paper-thin armour TD and get up close and personal with the 4 enemy tanks we were pulling apart? (It's probably more to do with the fact I killed three of them but he only killed one...)
It's amazing how someone who can apparently be so experienced at WoT; he had 10k games with an efficiency of 1100 or so according XVM, but still not know what certain tanks are for.
