Unfortunately, for me, I have the Steam downloads of FO3 and NV so I haven't got a cat in hell's chance of making any mods work. That or I'm just computer illiterate.

All of my FO3, NV, Oblivion, Skyrim etc are all through Steam and I've had no issues whatsoever using the mod managers (through the Nexus site)- and I am far from computer savvy when it comes to that kind of thing!

Most of the mods have simply involved extracting the contents of the download folder into the game's 'data' folder within "program files > steam > steamapps > game" directory (where game is the name of the game you are modding).

I was always apprehensive about modding any of those games but they all have installation instructions listed in their description on the Nexus site (and most will have them in a readme file within the download too) and they have all been extremely straight forward to install and the 'mod manager' does an excellent job of telling you what mods are running at any point.

I imagine there are some mods out there that are a bit more involved but all of the ones I've ran (for all 4 of those games) have been a piece of cake to install and I've not experienced any issues with any of them- and as I say I am far from the most tech savvy out there!

Give it a try!

Edited to add: I actually have both the original GOTY edition of FO3 (on disk) and a subsequent Steam purchase of FO3 (after I stupidly misplaced my original copy!). I ran mods on both (the Steam version most recently) and I'm pretty sure the only difference was the location of the games folders.

If you just subscribe to a mod from the Steam workshop, it automatically installs where it should.

It's easy to mod the Steam version. Just install the FoMM (Fallout Mod Manager) and install via the Nexus by just clicking on the links I helpfully provided. Easy peasy!

It's even easier than that. For mods that support it (most do) just click on "Download with Manager" and it downloads and extracts them. Then click the install button in FoMM once downloaded. Couldn't really be much simpler.

Edit: Showing my age there. It's not called the FoMM any more - it's the NMM (Nexus Mod Manager), which is a unified version that supports Fo3, FoNV, Skyrim, Oblivion, etc.

Just to give you an idea of just how much the Nevada Skies mod adds to the experience, I was just sat up on the hill overlooking Cottonwood Cove, just down from the Sniper's Nest, with Boone, taking pot shots at the Legion with the Anti-Material rifle loaded with .50 cal Incendiary. Then the skies started to darken and a few drops of rain fell, and it started getting darker in a matter of 10-15 secs as the rain got progressively heavier, then there was a big flash of lightning and the heavens opened. Boone and I crept down under cover of the rain to mop up, and free the slaves.

That is true, I forgot to mention that! I personally didn't have much luck with the mod manager installer recently, every time I clicked the 'download with mod manager' button I got taken to a 'this screen cannot be displayed' tab.

I imagine it's simply because I have an old unsupported version installed? Either way I was too lazy to investigate this so I've simply downloaded & installed any mods manually for the time being.

There is still a thriving mod community for Fo:NV, some of which make it look beautiful (Nevada Skies especially). I'd really recommend installing that, and also the 4GB memory patch.

Edit: Read back a page or so for other recommendations from me. smile
