Skyrim got named game of the year at the IGA's. It's voted for by the public as well.

Being named game of the year in October, before all the big games come out is a bit cheeky

Well not really, it was named game of the year up to the date of the awards, in the same way most other awards work. Skyrim was also named the "One to watch" so it'll probably get GOTY at the 2012 Golden Joysticks.
