Ok. Like the 'Official YouTube' Thread. I thought it would be good to have an area where PHers can post their GoPro/ContourHD/Bulletcam/Helmet camera videos.

The rules are:
  • Please put a descriptive title with them (just so people know what they're getting before clicking - I'm thinking people at work!)
  • In the description please put any technical details such as Camera type, settings used, mount, video editting software or anything else that might be appropriate. This is as much about the technical aspects of the video as the actual content.
  • Emphasis on PHer's work. Strictly speaking the YouTube thread is for other peoples work. This is one for the photography forum.
  • Keep 'em clean (ish)
  • Post your best videos biggrin

This is a video we filmed last year at a forest near Aylesbury that we ride at. Filmed with a GoPro and Canon 550d with kit lens. I'm the one in white.

This was self filmed and learnt so much from this and just in the process of doing something better soon!

A run up the country - from Kent to just outside Aberdeen.

Picture taken every three seconds with my Contour.
10 Hours drive into seven minutes.

Click me here

Suckermounted to the windscreen and connected to a 12V power supply from the Landrover.

Expect my next similar video to be Kent to Islay via Edinburgh in a couple of months.

Very good, I've seen that video before. I intend to do one from Bristol to the Lakes very soon (this weekend if the camera arrives) and I was wondering what frequency to do. 1 every 3secs looks alright to me unless you recommend otherwise?

My starting position was 25 fps for normal video, so at a shot every 3sec gives me for every 1 min 15sec of actual time would give me 1sec of video.

I ended up with about 11,000 images. Which would give me 440 or so seconds of video hence - 7 minutes of video.

I thought any slower shots and the fluid movement of the truck on the road wouldn't have been so evident and perhaps more jerky as I swapped lanes made turns etc.

First attempt at taking a brave pill and sticking the GoPro on the outside of the car, plus an exercise in getting used to editing with Sony Vegas. Pleased with it in parts, though it feels disjointed and doesn't really flow from start to finish. Also, the wind noise is a bit of a nuisance.

http://youtu.be/SElDf3sDY3I?hd=1

Filmed with a GoPro HDHero2 using the motorsports sucker mount and skeleton back and edited using Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11. Filmed it at the default resolution of 1280x960, edited it at 1280x960, rendered it, swore a lot, fannied about a lot, changed the project resolution to 1280x720, cropped every clip to that resolution... Learnt that lesson, I'll film in 1280x720 or 1920x1080 next time.

Nice! What went wrong with the 1280x960 then?

Oh, and you need a external mic wink

This - it scaled the content down to 960x720 and pillarboxed it:

I couldn't find a way of making it output at 1280x960 or a 4:3 format with decent resolution, or of forcing it to output at 1280x720 with the top and bottom cropped. Well, fair enough, I suppose, it's obviously going to scale it and add vertical bars, but what really made me stop was that it applied the transitions to the whole screen, not just the scaled image - like this:

I decided I'd rather crop 240 pixels off the top and bottom than have the small screen and transition weirdness.

I guess that would fix it!

What do you think of the Sony software? It's in my amazon basket ready for when I buy my GoPro

I used to use Windows Movie Maker, but it's pretty limited and my more powerful PC didn't have it. So I installed the latest version, Windows Live Movie Maker, and it was utterly awful, dumbed down to the point of being useless. I installed the trial version of Adobe Premiere Elements and didn't like it - I had to edit the XML template file to get it to import the GoPro footage at the correct resolution, which got me off to a bad start, and I found the user interface felt like a cross between iTunes and Facebook and irritated me. I asked here to see what was being used and got a recommendation for Vegas.

I bought it for £25 from PC world (buy online, pick up in store or it's a tenner more) and I like it a lot better than Premiere. It just seems more intuitive (or maybe less viciously unintuitive). One thing to be aware of is that like the Adobe product, it's crippleware. There are things you will see people doing with it that the consumer version doesn't do, or doesn't do as easily or as flexibly, but for a third of the price of Premiere it's a no-brainer I think.

I think the main thing you get extra with the suite is an audio editor. Maybe some stock media as well. The basic product includes the DVD authoring software. The big upgrade is to the Pro product, which is five hundred quid.

Talk about sucker mounts reminded me of this.

Trying out the Contour sucker mount on my car on a bumble about in Kent.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-fHF9eyLHc

I'll warn you now - I knew it was windy so had overdubbed the audio track but WMG took offence and blocked it so this is the original and windy edit.

It's also reminded me of the first day I got the sucker mount and the Contour HD - we tried it in this, the Team Saluki buggy during the Desert Challenge 2010.

http://vimeo.com/10721985

It stayed on the whole week and didn't budge even when they rolled it (annoyingly we had filled the card for that day).
