Cheburator mk2 said: I am not a pro, thus it is quite beyond me why would I ever need anything better than my Mk2... 17/40L, 70/200L and 50 1.4 are more than enough. Better autofocus ability in the dark... For double the price? No wonder, Mk2 prices are strong... I'm not a pro either but the slower and less accurate AF put me off the 5D2, whilst I mainly shoot landscapes where AF isn't an issue I also use my 1Ds Mkii as a second body for motorsport, airshows etc to my 1D Mkii and the 5D2 wouldn't be up to the job. The 5D3 on the other hand makes it a lot more useable.

Hope you are enjoying yours as much as I am mine! I'm certainly enjoying it alot, a definite step up from my D200.

I have a 5D2 that is regularly used for motorsport and airshows. I've yet to experience a focusing problem with it.

I didn't really experience any focus problems with my 20D (same 9 point AF as 5D mk1/2) but the jump up to the 1D AF is a big one, and unfortunately so is the jump back down. If I could justify a 5D mk3 I'd have one, as it has the best bits of the 5D mk1/2 but fixes what I see as their main weakness - the AF.

I'm loving mine, the AF is very good, even better than my 1 series bodies, the IQ is superb. I've been unable to process properly till yesterday, although DPP is OK I am used to Capture One Pro and it wasn't updated till yesterday. Files seem to have a higher dynamic range than my 1Ds Mk2, I can push and pull them more, there is tonnes of detail to be had, they're not so big that I need a new Macbook Pro (one of the considerations when considering a move to the darkside for a D800e).
The customisation is much easier than one series, a simple setup where I can set the AF on button, DoF preview button etc to do different functions. The little joystick is great to use for AF point selection.
The screen is a revelation, and being able to rate images on the go is a really good idea. In camera HDR is a bit of a novelty but does give you an idea what you could achieve if you wanted. For interior shots, on the natural setting, it works a treat, pulling out shadows and keeping windows from blowing out.
The original plan was to sell my 1Ds Mk2 and keep my 1D Mk2 for airshows, Le Mans etc, to be honest the 5D Mk3 is so good I'm wondering about selling both those and buying another.

Not the mk3 I know, but I pushed the button on a mk2 today, to replace my 40d. Just need to get it into the house without the wife noticing now. If she sees the box, I'm knackered. If I can get it into the camera bag, I can pass it off as being the same one I've always had...

I bought a 24-70 L last year, and I have the 50mm plastic fantastic, so I think that's probably all I need for now. I'm looking forward to enjoying the natural focal length of both now that I won't be using a crop body. I think the 24-70/5D combo is probably all the camera I'll ever really need... It also means I've got to sell the 17-85mm EF-S, but to be honest that hasn't had a look in since the L glass arrived.

I need to not be too enthusiastic about it around the house, as SWMBO doesn't know I've bought it and fell hook line and sinker for the "oh that's just my lens coming back from calibration" ruse for why citylink delivered a box yesterday.

Is the AF really that bad on a Mkii? I've heard a lot of people say this now. Coming from a 30D via a 5D mki to the mkii, I haven't noticed any problems with mine....is it just the case that it's not as good as the 1D range or is it significantly worse than other cameras in the same/cheaper price bracket?
