I've been holding off upgrading from my 40d for an age, waiting for the 5dmk3 to come along.
I won't go into the reasons for wanting one, I'm interested to see if anyone has any theories on price movements.
Currently with the kit lens it is £3689 more or less everywhere, a few places have it for a little less

Can anyone remember what happened to the 5dmk2 price, did it drop much in the first 6 months?

Cheers

D

You can see how the price has varied since April 2010. Unfortunately the graph doesn't go all the way back to launch. http://camerapricebuster.com/Canon_EOS_5D_Mark_II_...

Recommend that site for comparing prices of your new camera as well smile

FWIW, procamerashop also look like a Hong Kong based company, hence the lower price. It'll be a grey import, so you could have to pay import duty as well as the warranty being difficult to use.

I'm wondering about one too, had just about decided to buy a used Phase One digital back and a medium format setup to go with it but am now wondering if I'd be better trading my 1Ds Mkii for a 5D Mkiii and not having to buy all new lenses. I reckon the Phase One would end up costing me about £5k where after a trade in I could get a 5d Mkiii for about £2k and have all the bits I use and know already on hand.

The MF stuff is nice but pricey and ends up being very bulky.

still undicided over a 5d2 or 5d3.

No real IQ improvements in the 5d3 and the price doesnt make sense to me

It is pricy, but it has pro auto focus and amazing low light performance.

People will pay that money as nothing else can do the same.

The place where I get my gear is just working me out a price, looking very close to getting a 5D3, hopefully sorted in the morning.

Missed out on a 5d2 auction yesterday (5d2, 3300 shutter, + grip) and I could have bought a 24tse and had change from a 5d3 body...

So I'm guessing the main reason for shelling out for the 5D3 is the - apparently awesome - new AF?

Moire in video is apparently better also....

...but that price - 5D3 currently £2999, 5D2 approx £1640.

New AF is the big thing, new build and ergonomics, a few little tweaks here and there.

In terms of IQ it hasnt moved the game on much at all.

For me yes, I was tempted by a 5D Mkii for the resolution and high ISO (for travel shots where a tripod may not be possible) but having used 1 series bodies I am spoilt by their AF, if I can get the quality and high ISO of the MKii with a decent 1 series style AF system then that's just the job.

The price of being in early, I've no doubt the street price will come down in time. On the other hand my alternative was going to be a used Phase One at £3-4000 and another £1000-1500 on a used 'Blad or Mamiya setup, plus I'd probably end up keeping my 1Ds Mkii for travelling, this way I don't need to shell out for a new system and lenses plus I can sell the 1Ds Mkii. I'm probably looking at an outlay of £1800-2000 instead of £4-5000.

The street price will come down, looking at the mkii, not a massive amount very quickly (watch me be proved wrong).

Anyway I got one, very pleased so far but I really have only just scratched the surface. It is a big step up from the 40d!

I'm going to take advantage of the price drop its caused on the Mk2 and go for that probably with a 17-40mm f/4 and 24-105mm f/4. Hoping to purchase one in the next few weeks.

It Would've been a D800 but I just cant justify the price and as I would need to change my lenses anyway going fullframe switching to canon isnt a big deal for me.

I've got 17-40 and 24-105, it is a good lineup though to be honest at the moment using the 17-40 for 95% of stuff

What price drop? MKii's have actually gone up recently, now almost £100 more than it was a couple months ago (for body only at least). frown

I asked about a price-drop in a few shops last week and was given a firm 'no' in each case, they are obviously confident they can sell the remaining units at the current (or higher!?) prices...
