I love seals, would love to get close enough to photograph some.

More fungi, I managed to get out today between showers.

This one looks a bit like an octopus if you ask me.

Dogsey, are you using flash for these? I generally have found getting the eposure even and correct is tricky.

And I thought I was being so original (and perhaps ripping off a Jurassic Park quote)...

Oh well. Imitation being flattery etc - please be flattered!

hehe it doesn't bother me! Yeah, I went for the Jurassic Park quote too. Let's settle for 'great minds'!

You know how the second half of that saying goes, though...?

I love wild plants growing in weird places in the city. I had noticed this clump of them (in a tunnel under a bridge, under some lights: hence the lighting in the photo despite it being night time). I just got a new 1.8 lens, and had to have a go at photographing it...

I'm at home at my Mum's place in Surrey this weekend - having viewed this thread, I shall go on a mushroom hunt in the woods armed with the same 45mm 1.8 lens, and some sort of portable lighting...

Yep, it's usually so dark under the trees and a bit of flash helps with the details.

Love the mushroom pics Dogsey/Mike. One of my current favourite passtimes is IDing (and eating) various wild fungi, just don't have time generally to take pics. Doubt they'd be quite as good as yours anyway.

Few autumnal shots from the weekend from me, predictably from Westonbirt:

Got the opportunity to photograph the Red Deer rut in Richmond Park last week, the light was terrible, grey and overcast and not helped by my location in the middle of a stand of trees so very contrasty and using the Sigma 150-500 meant pushing the ISO up to 1200+ which is a bit much for the D200

These look pretty damn good to me Ray thumbup

What's your opinion on the 150-500 ? I am vaguely contemplating one of these or perhaps the Sigma 120-400 scratchchin

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the comment.

The Sigma 150-500 is pretty good but slightly soft at the top end, the OS system works pretty well but it is a big beast and I normally use it on a monopod with a Manfrotto rocker head and using the Sigma's OS1 setting.

If I am frankly honest I would go with the OEM 100-400, Canon in your case as I feel the Nikkor is that bit sharper but obviously it's more expensive. That aside the Sigma is good and I think the new 50-500 with OS is even better than the 150-500

Thanks smile

I actually owned a 100-400 for a short time a couple of years ago but found it too big and heavy so disposed of it shortly after! paperbag

It's only rarely I need a long lens so a second hand Sigma is probably going to do me fine. I'm thinking of going FF so I guess that 500mm would be nice (I already have a 270mm lens on my crop sensor so 400 on full frame would actually be less if my maths is correct!).

Cracking thread. I posted this pic in the random thread, but I'm pretty sure I haven't posted it here before.
