/\/\/\ Cracking IQ on both of those Rob, oh for the funds for that sort of length and quality!

Two more from this weeks visit to WHF, sooner or later I'll get some time to process all of them!

Two good gull shots there Rob. Much as I'd like one of Canons super teles (especially the 500mm f/4) the prices are a bit much for an amateur like me. The 400mm f/5.6 can produce results nearly as good as the 400mm f/2.8 and, as you say, it's a damn sight easier to hand hold. I took this shot of a herring Gull with my 400mm f/5.6 last month:

He bought it used as a kit (lens, tc's and tripod/wimberly) for a decent price, and will sell it on again in a year or two at no loss I think. Just means money tied up for a while.

So long as the mount system does not change and the orginal lens had a good reputation the values tend to hold up rather well it seem - helped by Canon often substantially increasing the RRP when they introduce a new version.

Whether new higher resolution sensors and other in body processing considerations start to come into play and lead to perceived obsolescence (and so a value fall off) is another matter. But in effect, over the shorter term, as Rob says it is just a matter of money tied up in something that should be relatively easy to liquidate should the need arise.

Of course, if you don't have the free cash to invest in the first place that's a different matter.

The new 200-400/280-560 looks very interesting although I really doubt it will be brought in at an affordable price.

I love these cats, in my opinion they have the most amazing coat of any animal.

They do get a little tricky to photograph when they come right up to you, in fact just after this shot he came an looked right down the barrel of the lens. A macro lens would have been more appropriate than the telephoto I was using!

Right, here goes... my first contribution, and also my first upload to Flickr (ever...)

Ferruginous Hawk by ant-k, on Flickr

It's only a 72dpi jpeg... as that's the only copy I've got here at work and I'm procrastinating. But C&Cs welcome...

Welcome Mr. Kitten. ( There is also a bird thread.)

Good start. thumbup

May I suggest you try and get a highlight in the eye. It really brings the subject to life IMO.

A long way from me sadly as I'd like to visit there. Enjoyed seeing your pictures of them.

It's a fair distance from here (NW Gloucestershire) too, fortunately I have family I can stay with in Kent. I did one of their photographers day back in 2009 ( Set here) and visited them again last week when they held an open day. The access you get on a photographers day is exceptional, the open day was more like a normal zoo visit but you can still get great shots if you plan a little.

Thanks, very nice set. The photographers day is a great idea, if only we had something like that going on in the N E.

Mrs Get works as a volunteer for the RSPB so we tend to get sick birds to look after, pass on to the right place. We were told that a Golden Eagle had broken it's wing so picked it up wrapped in a towel and in a box, and left it in our garage last night to get over shock. Needless to say it was a Buzzard (Everyone that comes here thinks they see Golden Eagles. I've seen 2 in 15 years. See lots of Sea Eagles mind) ... anyway, Buzzard is now en route to a raptor rescue centre on Skye. Managed to give it honey & warm water before it left. Looks good for a possible recovery. Quite alert and bright:

Saw you tweet about this last night Steve, I was pretty jealous at the time as I'd love to see a Golden Eagle. However it's only a Buzzard and we get those over the house here so for once I don't hate you! hehe

Last of the big cat photos and its back to that stunning pair of Amur Leopard cubs.
