I kind of don't get these tilt-shift lenses (other than doing the toytown thing) - can anybody explain how the above image differs to something taken with an ordinary wide angle ? TIA

They cover some wide ground but should provide the insight you seek.
I vaguely followed that I think! So you can reduce distortion which I guess is useful when photographing buildings where converging verticals would be an issue? But is this not easily fixed in PP though ?
Sorry, I am not the sharpest tool in the shed with this kind of thing!

Thats exactly it. You can correct the verticals in PS yes by stretching and compressing areas of the image, this is a better way to do it though, imo. The processing time drops somewhat when the correction is done in camera tooPGD5 said:

I'm back after my router decided it didn't want to route any more.
For the last few days, we have had astonishing light, colour & weather here. Worth clicking on the below for full size methinks.
I see this view every day, but it's the best it has ever looked, since I moved here:

Wow and indeed wee. I don't often comment on your pictures because it's fairly obvious that you know what you're doing (the same goes for others on here), but those are stunning. For the last few days, we have had astonishing light, colour & weather here. The west coast really does get completely different weather and sea states from the east, you just don't get that flat calm here.

However the advent of ever crappier lenses (small and light and easier to make) that require software fixes in the PP process to be usable has led to (or has been enabled by) the ability of software to fix the crud. This is helped, to en extent, by lots of pixels in the sensors 'cos you can hack stuff around and throw stuff away and you still have "enough" information to reconstruct something that fudges the issue but will look acceptable for most purposes. However what you can't get is a movement of the plane of focus. Not yet anyway.
The T&S lenses for SLR type cameras are intended to address the sort of functionality that old style 'bellows' cameras provided.
Try this as another starting point.

Burj Khalifa in Dubai, previous shot was taken about 4pm so starting to get quite hazy, and just on the wee S95.
How did you enjoy my town?IMG_0643 by chrisj_abz, on Flickr

Nice shot, you are pretty limited with what you can do up there, yours works well.
Another Architectural shot from me.. This building faces the building I posted yesterday

Full view to avoid the oversharpen - I really should start using my own website for this sort of stuff a little more..

was there on Honeymoon, stayed down by the creek so nice and central, bit of a barmy place, reminds me of Vegas with shops instead of casino's...
