Quick question to all, What would you pay for a high mileage but well looked after D700 body? Or the least you have seen them sell for?
Cheers.

I remember some very high mileage ones going for well under £1000....we're talking 100,000 plus actuations.
I wouldn't pay up too much for one as D800's are starting to become more freely available and if the rumours are true about the D600 specs and pricing the D700 won't be worth £1000 plus for much longer.
Tis a bloody good camera but those two will definitely hurt it's residuals.

How does £700 sound? is that reasonable considering the above?

Those high actuation D700's were through MBP Photographic a few months ago and were in that area. If the camera you are looking at has less than 100,000 actuations that's very, very cheap.

Those high actuation camera actually had up to 400,000 actuations but came with a 6 month warranty. I think £700 for a D700 with 100,000 actuations is a good price. I think the shutter is rated for 150,000 or so.

Some good feedback, much appreciated. He also threw in the MB10 grip and a camera bag, so I took the plunge, I cant wait to try it out.
One last query, what should i expect when using it with my current D90 lens setup? I understand the images will be cropped as they are not full frame lenses?
Just reading about compact flash, Sandisk sell 60mb/s and 30mb/s, but the write speeds are limited by the host device, do you happen to know what the write speed is of a D700?
cheers

With DX lenses the camera will autocrop to 5Mp (this is switchable in the menu so you can have all 12Mp if you like, and crop manually afterwards). And because you don't really want a 5Mp camera you will now have to sell them all and buy FX ones

I've never heard people complain about the buffer on a D700. You really need some FX lenses though to appreciate the abaility of the camera.......what lenses do you have ?
80-200 F2.8 is a good and cheap (ish) second hand FX lens. 50mm is hard to beat for value obviously.
Downside of FX is the costs of the lenses!

Is there a noticeable difference. I know I will have to try it myself, but the wait till I get home and out, if its not raning is murder.

Downside of FX is the costs of the lenses! This is the part Im not liking, after painfully building my small amateur collection, having to change again 12-24 18-200 1.8 50mm 70-300 VRII 40mm Macro With all of the above, I might get 1 good FX lens I suppose, the equivalent of the 18-200 to start with.

Which 50mm 1.8 do you have? The AF-S 50mm f/1.8G is FX isn't it? As is the 70-300mm VR. Should be ok with those two at least.

Jetl3on said: what are the pros/cons of accepting the 5mp limitation or switching to 12Mp and cropping? Is there a noticeable difference. Vignetting depends on the lens and the focal length - IIRC some DX lenses will fill most of the screen at certain focal lengths. So if you want to get the most for your money, crop manually to suit each image. No, you are in grown-up land now so forget superzooms You have the 12-24 already (assuming you mean the Nikon f2.8 jobbie?) The other two common members of the FX club are the 24-70 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8. I tried to run DX and FX alongside each other; it's a nightmare because you need two sets of lenses. As well as the vignetting issue, your effective focal length is different. You either need to embrace FX properly, or not at all I think.

And an AF-S 70-300mm ED, G, VR? Both those are FX lenses. So there you go, you have got a couple to play with there. I'm honestly not sure I would bother with the whole DX lenses and cropping on a D700, kind of defeats the point?

And an AF-S 70-300mm ED, G, VR? I don't think either of those are specific DX lenses so should be fine on an FX camera.
