Dear PH Gopro gods,

I got given a Astak Action Pro 3. At first I was a little underwhelmed with it. But on further inspection it's half decent. To get some more use out of it I intend to get a clamp to clamp it to my bike and various pieces of machinery, a harness so I can take some running snaps and possibly a pole.

I prefer stills to movies and am still learning how my camera works. It would be nice to be able to use the menu when it's in its box and also the remote didn't seem to want to operate the camera on the back of my machine from my cab yesterday.

It was bought for me as a taster instead of going the whole Gopro route. So would a Gopro be significantly better for taking stills? They look very expensive to me, don't come with much in the way of useful accessories and seem to have a very poor battery life. I'm thinking learn how to use the Astak then get something better, so is the Gopro the one to have?

I believe the Astak is 8MP for stills? The GoPro Hero 3+ Black is 12MP and although alot more money than the Astak the Hero 3+ Black is much higher spec and has a massive range of mounts available both from GoPro and aftermarket manufacturers.

Probably worth sticking to the Astak until you're ready to take the plunge if you feel you need the higher spec at the higher price.

In other news, just found out about some new GoPro mounts coming:-

The Frame v2.0
The Blackout Housing
Hero 3+ LCD Touch BacPac and Battery BacPac (FINALLY!!!!)
Gooseneck
Mic Stand Mount
Hero 3+ Black "Music" Edition (no wifi remote but does come with Jaws Flex Clamp + Removable Instrument Mounts)

Question for you all - I'm off to NY tomorrow and was planning on picking up a Hero3+ Black as they are 'only' $400 over there which is about £250 I think.

But then I got thinking, do I really need a black if I could get the silver and use it in conjunction with my iPhone? Is the wifi remote the only difference, or would I regret not going black?

Most people would not use the extra features of the black one but the free remote and higher frame rate is what sold it for me. The remote alone is around £80 I think. Some people see it as a gimmick but I use it all the time especially when the camera is on the outside of the car.
I also found the higher frame rate is very useful for slow mo stuff.
Last but not least, a friend has a silver one and I found a noticeable difference in photo quality. This is a pic I took when messing around with the Victoria Beckham Range Rover....

There are quite a few difference between the Silver and Black not just the Wifi. Worth checking out the full spec list of both before deciding.

ABPAK-303 is the LIMITED EDITION version of the Battery BacPac and to make it compatible with the Hero 3+ it comes with a free Hero 3 Housing.

ABPAK-304 comes with the new Hero 3+ Backdoors.

There is also a new version of the Hero 3+ Black Edition out now called the "Music Edition", this comes without the Waterproof Housing and Wifi Remote but does come with a Jaws Flex Clamp, The Frame v2.0 + Clear Protective Lens Cover, 3.5mm Mic Adapter and 2 x Removable Instrument Mounts.

If you bought this a the LIMITED EDITION LCD or Battery BacPac above you would get a LCD screen or Battery with a free Hero 3 Waterproof Housing for £79.99 or £49.99.

It would be good to have the choice though, surely if you buy 2 cameras, you only need 1 remote?

Has anyone gone from a 3 or 3+ Silver to a Black?

I've got a Hero 3 Silver and used it loads last year, I love it. But given how much I love it I wish I'd got the Black as there are more resolution and frame rate options than the Silver. What I really want to do is record Medium angle, 720p and 60fps, which I believe I can do on the Black, but not on the Silver. I reckon this is the best balance between resolution, smoothness and file size. I find the wide angle (which gives me more resolution and frame rate options on the Silver) looks weird on the bike and figured the 3 Black was probably worth changing up to but maybe not worth the bigger jump to the 3+ Black.

Unless I just man up and get the 3+ Black...? Is there demand for cameras on their own with no cases etc as I thought I could maybe sell the Silver to put towards a new one? The camera is in perfect condition but as I use it on the bike the waterproof case has a few marks on it so I had wondered about selling the camera alone and buying a Black. With the 3+ being smaller though I'd probably just go for a 3 Black and try and get a deal with it being the old model... unless the 3+ is that much better that it's a waste buying the 3 now?

Andy

But as you can't seem to buy the camera without the remote you'd have 49 spare remotes...

There are several models available without the Wifi Remote.

The new Hero 3+ Black "Music" Edition doesn't come with one for example but instead comes with the new Frame, Clear Lens Protector, 3.5mm Mic Adpapter, Mic Stand Mount and 2 x Removable Instrument Mounts.

That's only just become available though.

As much as is like GoPro I feel that including pointless accessories to bump/justify the price is a bit off.

Hi all. Recently purchased the HD hero black - great little camera. I've used it once mountain biking where it performed fantastically. Then last week, on the first day of a ski holiday, it stopped working at the end of the day. I charged it back up, turned it on, but from there none of the buttons have any effect on functionality and the only way to turn it off is to pull the battery out. The remote doesn't have any control over it either.

Anyone had any similar experiences?

I've emailed GoPro customer services and am currently waiting on a reply so thought I'd pose the question to you lot in the mean time.

Couple of questions:-

What make/model memory card are you using?

How did you charge the camera?
