There is no such thing in FPS. USA and UK use different FPS. Real time is analogue, which cameras can't do. The only thing that can see in real time is the Mk 1 eyeball.
I'd disagree that the term is only reserved for analogue use. In CGI rendering terms there is such a concept; it means that the footage doesn't have to be speeded up like an animation does but can be generated fast enough to be played out without delay - ie. in real time. In fact, any task that does not need to be prepared at length beforehand but can instead be done on the fly can be said to be able to be done in real time.

I think that what James was trying to get at is that the camera should be able to capture and encode 4K video at its native frame rate (whatever that is - I think it is 60fps) but I agree that the term wasn't the correct one to use in this context.
Well the same is in music. One records in 'Real time' but it is never real time as there are now millions of holes in between the 'bits'. Is 44.1 real time or 48? Answer = neither.

It's all semantics really, but frame rate doesn't have anything to do with 'Real time', it's just how many segments real time is broken down into. If I took a million frames a second, I would still miss most of what is happening.

What kind of record rates do you reckon you'll get on a card using 4K @25fps?

Can't imagine it would be less that 20GB per hour

Any hints as to what is going to be new about it?
4K resolution at a speed of 30 frames per second, 1080p at 120fps and 720p at 240fps

Oh and an even worse battery life hehe

That would be my guess anyway.

Got some great deals on GoPro accessories in Florida today, LCD screen for $59 (£35) batteries $15 (£8.90) Matt black case $35 (£21).

Worth bearing in mind should anyone be heading that way, Best buy and WallMart.

Way too many pages here for me to even consider reading through so could someone please tell me which gopro would be best for me including accessories...

Quite simply I'd like to mount it on my motorbike and cars both internally and externally with the ability to capture quality sound.

Many thanks

The best is the most expensive obviously, which currently is the Hero 3+ black edition. Regardless of which package you buy you'll need to buy roll bar and suction cup mounts for what you intend to use it for.

Pretty much any of them would do in that case.

Personally I think the Silver is the best value for money, on the grounds that the White is a little basic overpriced for what you get, and the Black has features that you may not need but pay for anyway. The Silver is the sweet spot between the two.

Of course if you want the best then obviously go for the Black.

Take a look at the GoPro website and you can compare the Silver 3+ with the Black 3+ and see if any of the features are "must have". Something like the Wifi Remote which if you would use it, make the Black Edition the best option but there may be other features that sway your decidion.

I've sent you an email with details of the forum discount on offer for GoPro stuff.

News: GoPro are apparently going public.

I had to laugh at the line "The firm (...) is breaking the mould for startups that want to go public by actually being profitable."

Hi all,

Since this thread is now 90 pages long, I thought Id post this quickly and then attempt to read through it afterwards!

I recently borrowed my friends Hero 3 Black for recording in-car driving footage. He doesnt have a GoPro suction cup mount, so I used a generic smartphone windscreen suction cup mount that I bought off Amazon a year or so ago.

It held the GoPro securely, but as I have not used one of these before, I encountered some issues with the resulting video.

Camera settings were 1080p/30fps, Wide view.

Screen shake was the biggest issue. I dont know if it was the cheap windscreen mount, my cars firm suspension, or crappy UK B road surfaces, but the screen shake made most of the footage virtually unwatchable. I did try a program called Deshaker to make it better, but the results were beyond awful.

I am considering getting the proper GoPro suction mount (which will have the added bonus of being able to use the camera outside of the car), so I hope that will help with the issue.

Secondly, I am wondering if switching the shooting mode to 720p/60fps or even 720p/120fps will help with the shaking? I would even try 1080p/60fps if I could manage the resulting file sizes.

The other issues I encountered were wind noise and dashboard reflection on the windscreen. From what I have read of this thread so far, it seems an external mic is the way to go for better audio.

With regards to the dash reflection, lots of youtube clips I have seen have this, so I am wondering if the problem is easily solvable at all without mounting the camera externally.

Thanks for reading, any advice appreciated!

This is all about the rigidity of the mount. The more arms etc you have on your mount, the more flex there will be. The gopro suction cup mount is quite good for this, it's very solid and can be locked in place quite well. The settings shouldn't make any difference to this. But if you can see the camera moving when you're driving along, then you'll have unwatchable footage.

Nothing wrong with that

The GoPro mount is OK but have a look at one of these, imo much more useable.

or if you want to do it properly one of these

Won't make any difference. Get the camera mounted right and it will be fine.

The sound from a GoPro is really bad as standard, you can plug a mic into GoPros but the best solution is to use a standalone audio recorder.

It's all about setting up your shots, time of the day etc etc. the best thing you can do is try a few different mount positions. What car are you using?
