Thanks for the responses Salgar and Rainmaker - it definitely seems like I need to invest in a sturdier mount!

Rainmaker - My car is a BMW 335i Coupe. Footage was captured at about 2pm on a sunny day, which in hindsight probably wasn't ideal. I assume early morning/Dusk are better times?

If the weather is good this weekend, I will have another go at it.

Thanks again

Thanks.

General question - for in-car (windscreen) and external use, are there any opinions on which is better out of this Fat Gecko mount:

http://www.hobbymounts.co.uk/shop/GoPro-Hero-Camer...

And the standard GoPro suction cup mount?

Quick question if you experts don;t mind smile

I have a little used Hero HD3 Silver and the latest app on mu iPhone5s.

How easy / difficult is it to update the HD3 firmware via the app?

I'm a bit of a ludite but I've offered my camera to a mate who is off to Florida diving soon so promised I'd update it....

Cheers,

Simon

It's pretty straight forward from what I recall when I did our 2 Black+'s. Just make sure you have the latest version of the App.

If you are mounting in the car, why not just use one of the permanent mounts? If they ever need to be removed, you can use a little wire and elbow grease to polish off the adhesive. I mount my GP H3 between my rearview mirror and the windscreen, then route the power cable behind the sun visor.

This video is from the weekend: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGOOSIz6Tgk.

Using the iPhone App you can adjust the angle to avoid so much dashboard in the frame.

Thanks, if I decide to really embrace the GoPro usage I will definitely try that. Im just starting at the moment so I am a little hesitant.

Nice video by the way, although I see you get the same dashboard reflection as I did when placing the camera there.

My friend and I will be visiting the autobahn in September.

I use fat gecko suction mounts on the outside of the car and have had no issues upto 150mph. I have never used the sticky pad mounts, if I wanted to mount something permanently I would make up some sort of bracket an bolt it to the car somehow, but I have never needed to do that yet.

Nice - what have you got the tether attached to on the car there?

The Fat Gecko range is pretty good quality stuff and ranges from the Stealth, Mini, Double and Triple Suction Cup Mounts.

I always recommend using a tether but only if you can do it safely without the risk of a bouncing camera damaging your body/paintwork. Sometimes saving the camera can cause more damage in terms of money than the camera is worth.

It's not advertised within the thread as we want to keep within the forums advertising rules. We're allowed to email individuals but not link direct to products. Nothing stopping anyone else linking but not something we can do :-(

Initially I thought cool, a tether! Then a few seconds later I had visions of the camera tethered and bouncing against the car bodywork at 150 mph, if the suction mount failed. :-)

Yes, I've always maintained this. If you weigh up the cost of a camera, mount, and memory card against the cost of of bodywork repairs, it's generally better to let it fall off and give some lucky person a free camera (assuming you fail to find it).

I guess it also depends on how much value you attach to the recording so far, of course.

I forget exactly where that one was attached but I always run the tether through the door shut and attach it to the nearest solid object like a door handle or grab handle.

I have never had a suction mount fail and have done a lot of miles with them on the outside of the car (probably 2000 miles or so) nor has anyone I know had one fail. I even did about 800 miles in one go without 're-fitting' the suction mount and it was still as strong as ever when I came to remove it.

Personally I can't see how any significant damage would get done if it were to fail, a few scratches possibly, but most of it is plastic and there would be minimal horizontal force if it did fail, it would mainly just dangle there flapping about a bit in the wind.

Also with regard weighing up the cost, it's not difficult to have in excess of £1k worth of camera equipment on a suction mount(s) so it would take an awful lot of paint damage to outweigh that.

Last but not least, if you have 3rd party insurance for filming and are covered for filming from a car then a tether is a requirement of all the policies I looked at.

In general a good quality suction mount shouldn't come off even at high speed providing you've prepped the suction area and suction cup(s) properly, ie, cleaned with Isopropyl Alcohol or something similar.
